'Tis the Season to Save Money
Sticking to the List Without Breaking the Bank
By Deborah Ng
Often we can find cheaper gifts online, and many people would rather shop from home without having to navigate through crowds of people. Still, there are some things to keep in mind, such as taxes and shipping charges.
Sometimes the expense to ship the item, especially in the last couple of weeks before the holiday, can make the item cost more than you had bargained for. Find the online shops offering free or discounted shipping, and try to order as early as possible to pay ground instead of air charges. If you can, shop at sites specializing in half price or discounted merchandise.
There are also thoughtful options that cost more in time than money. If you have an elderly or disabled friend or relative on the list, why not offer goods and services instead? Give a gift certificate entitling the recipient to receive a day of housecleaning or a home-cooked meal. This may be more appreciated and better received than a store-bought gift.
Try putting other talents to use. Make up baskets of home-baked goods or homemade crafts, or take advantage of your children's talents. What grandparent wouldn't love framed artwork from the grandchildren?
Holiday shopping time doesn't have to be holiday stress time. The key s to avoid the holiday rush. Take your time and plan your list, shop early and often and compare prices. This way, when the holiday season does fall upon us, you'll have the time and mindset to enjoy those things that truly count. And isn't that more important?
