Consigning Tips

If buying or selling through a consignment store appeals to you, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Know the store. Is it clean? Brightly lit? Is the staff helpful? How long has the store been in business? Do they carry insurance?
  • Be realistic. Something that sold for $60 two years ago won't fetch the same amount today, especially if used.
  • Keep track of your merchandise. It's up to you to stay on top of things. Call the store periodically to see if any of your items have sold. If you want your unsold items returned, tell the manager not to automatically donate to charity. Have a signed agreement along with a list of all items offered for consignment. If possible, know in advance how much your items will sell for and get this in writing, as well.
  • Be mindful of the weather. Most stores sell according to season. A heavy sweater will not sell in June; likewise, a bathing suit will not be put on the racks in October. Shopping at the end of the season, however, may yield better bargains, as prices are lowered to clear the shelves for more seasonable items.
  • Find out the best time to drop off your merchandise. Many shops take items on an appointment-only basis. Even those that don't will appreciate your finding out the most convenient time for drop off, which is most likely during off-peak or slow hours.
  • Consider the neighborhood. Upscale neighborhoods tend to carry more name-brand goods, which sell for a fraction of the original cost. "Names ensure good quality, which means the clothes last longer," says Favilla. Name brands also sell better than discount store brands. A name-brand T-shirt, for instance, might sell for $3, whereas a discount store brand can sell for $.50.

Shopping at a consignment store is a win-win situation – not only can you find good quality, hardly used items at a fraction of the original cost, but you may be able to earn a little pocket money as well. The best part? No one ever has to know!
