What's New in Beauty

A fresh set of beauty standards is emerging, along with exciting new looks for moms. Among the newest influencers of today's beauty trends are national pride and all things American.

According to New York City-based celebrity makeup artist Rachel Weingarten, we're seeing a return to "natural beauty" prompted by the events of September 11 and the resulting national outpouring of patriotism. "As we're all becoming so much more aware of our patriotic nature, I've received many e-mails from women talking about how proud they are to be American. They want to have that healthy, natural 'American Beauty' look," Weingarten says. "I think it will be sort of a melting pot approach to beauty in the coming months – women accentuating their all-American looks – no matter what their nationality."

Beauty Is All-American

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that this patriotic theme has influenced makeup and body care. According to Andrea Pomerantz Lustig, editor-in-chief of Sephora.com, the e-commerce arm of the Paris-based cosmetic store Sephora, several companies are marketing new "All-American" products. For example, the cosmetic company Lorac has created a patriotic makeup trio called "Red, White and You." Packaged in a triangle-shaped compact, this kit includes Lorac's Revel Lip Polish, Shimmer Highlight Cream and Navy Mascara. "This product is a great way to 'show your colors,'" Lustig says. "I also predict we will see the return of blue eye shadow."
