Condition: Large Pores

For women with more noticeable pores, Neutrogena has a Pore Refining line of skin care treatments to help minimize their appearance for clearer-looking skin. The Pore Refining Cleanser has small exfoliating microbeads that help slough off old skin while an alpha and beta hydroxy combination helps minimize pores. The Pore Refining Cream is recommended as a daily moisturizer with SPF 15 and Retinol to help even out the skin's surface. Lastly, for women with oily skin, the Mattifier absorbs oil to help maintain a smooth, oil-free finish.

Condition: Fragrance-sensitive Skin

Cetaphil offers fragrance-free, non-irritating products that are extremely gentle and non-greasy. The Gentle Skin Cleanser was formulated for dermatologists as a gentle, non-irritating cleanser for even the most sensitive skin. Unlike soap, Cetaphil is completely non-alkaline, non-comedogenic and fragrance free. It's so gentle that the company even recommends its use on babies. Next, the Cetahphil SPF 15 Daily Moisturizer with Parasol 1789 is paba-free and non-comedogenic (won't clog pores). It's a lightweight lotion that provides good protection from the harmful effects of the sun.

Skin SOS

Some skin care conditions, such as broken capillaries and rosacea, require a more targeted approach. Broken capillaries are small clumps of unessential blood vessels that are located near the surface of the skin that have expanded and become visible. Rosacea is a relatively common, chronic skin disorder believed to affect up to 13 million Americans, resulting in facial redness and inflammation, particularly on the cheeks, nose, forehead and around the mouth. Though dermatologists may recommend prescription remedies to treat both of these conditions, over-the-counter treatments are available.

Remedies

Ling, a Chinese skin care specialist with three salons in New York City, was schooled in Hong Kong in both old and new beauty methods. Her skin care products use natural products such as ginseng to treat a variety of skin conditions. Ling's Vitamin K Recovery Cream is designed to decrease the appearance of broken capillaries and rosacea as well as alleviate the irritation associated with chemical peels. Ling explains that this rich cream contains vitamin K to reduce capillary fragility or blood serum leakage, vitamin C for its anti-oxidant properties, vitamin E to repair, vitamin A to prevent degeneration of tissues, vitamin B to desensitize, vitamin D for its anti-irritant properties, hyaluronic acid for its intense moisturizing properties and Aloe Barbadensis Gel to soothe and heal.

"Women with rosacea should avoid abrasive and exfoliating cleansers as well as hot and spicy foods, caffeine, extreme hot and cold temperatures and alcoholic beverages," Ling says. "Look for gentle cleansers and moisturizers with green tea, soothing lavender, aloe and vitamins A and E." For more information, visit www.lingskincare.com.

Another New York company, Joey New York, produces a redness-reducing product called Calm and Correct. This topical emollient "helps to correct several skin problems such as rosacea, broken capillaries, redness from acne, chemical peels and laser treatments, as well as spider veins on the legs," says founder Joey Roer. Roer also explains that family history reveals a lot about your skin.

"Look at your genes," Roer says. "From there, it is best to concentrate on the areas where you might start to see skin problems. For example, if your mother or grandmother has wrinkles in a certain place, chances are you might develop them there, too." For more, visit www.joeynewyork.com.

Canadian pharmaceutical and dermatological chemist Ben Kamins offers his Booster Blue Rosacea Treatment, an emollient anti-inflammatory formula, which he says complements doctor treatments where traditional products have failed. Kamins has been developing medicines for physicians and dermatologists across North America for more than 30 years and sells his customized skin care products online at www.bkamins.com and in specialty stores and spas nationwide. "I personally have a stage 1 rosacea condition, and I developed Booster Blue in the lab for myself," Kamins says. "The treatment is both anti-inflammatory and emollient and may be used alone or together with prescription medications. Many dermatologists are now recommending Booster Blue for their patients, and it is helping thousands of people around the world." For more information on B. Kamins products, visit their Web site (www.bkamins.com).
