Tips to Keep You Glowing

In terms of elective dental procedures, such as professional teeth whitening using bleaching trays or fillings, Johnson warns pregnant women to be careful, especially if they plan to have an anesthetic. "You do absorb things through the mouth," she says. "I would be cautious in the first and third trimester. I think it depends on the individual. If you are going to be on the Oprah show you might want to have it done, but I would not take any risk with a baby."

Johnson says pregnancy gingivitis is a common concern for as many as 80 percent of pregnant women. Bleaching trays used for teeth whitening can aggravate pregnancy gingivitis, she says.

"I'd proceed with caution," Johnson says. "It's like hair color. I'm a mother of two children and if I had a patient who wanted to bleach and was pregnant, I'd advise her to wait until after she delivers."

Finally, if you don't feel as beautiful during your pregnancy as you did prior to it, it's not all in your head. Experts say pregnancy hormones can cause hair color changes, occasionally causing your hair to thin.

Visit a hairstylist for a new haircut or to have your hair curled. Since the Food and Drug Administration has not made a conclusion about the effects of hair-color chemicals on the fetus, it's better to err on the side of caution.

During the first trimester, if you have a tendency to feel nauseous, visit a salon that does not do permanents or use foul-smelling hair solutions. Avoiding certain nail and hair salons is not so much for the baby's health, but to save you the embarrassment of needing to vomit due to the strong odors.

Mom-to-be Beauty Tips
  • Exercise. Women who exercise during pregnancy not only have shorter labors, but report feeling more energetic and attractive. Continue to exercise, but avoid high-impact and complicated routines such as step aerobics since your balance may be shaky.
  • Drink more water. Having well-hydrated skin can make you appear more attractive. Also, follow a healthful diet.
  • Wear fashionable clothes. Just because you are pregnant and won't be able to wear your maternity clothes forever does not mean you have to feel drab instead of fab. Splurge on fashionable clothes.
  • Mom-to-be Holiday Beauty-Tips to Keep You GlowingUse color to your advantage. Whether it's a colorful scarf or a touch of eye shadow, use color to perk up your appearance. Choose makeup that is natural or organic.
  • Don't hide your pregnancy. One of the biggest beauty mistakes women make is to try to mask their pregnancies. Be proud of your pregnancy and wear clothes to accentuate your baby bump.
  • Remove the mask of pregnancy. Some pregnant women experience darkened skin across the cheeks, nose or forehead caused by hormones. Often called the mask of pregnancy, the condition can become worse from sun exposure. Always wear sunscreen outdoors.
  • Prevent stretch marks. Women often worry about unsightly stretch marks during pregnancy. Select natural lotions, which do not contain harmful chemicals or herbs, to prevent the white streaks caused when the skin is excessively stretched during pregnancy.
  • Keep it simple. When it comes to makeup, most pregnant women can rely on three basics. Use a concealer for blotchy areas and the dark circles under your eyes. Pick a blush and lip color, again selecting natural makeup products.
  • Eat in moderation during special events. When it comes to the holidays, most people overeat. When you are pregnant you may already justify eating for two. Be even more diligent not to overeat during the holidays and parties.
  • Practice meditation or relaxation techniques to eliminate stress. Being stressed can lead to worry lines and make you look ragged. Burn pleasant-smelling scents in the home for a relaxing atmosphere.
