Personal Care Products and Pregnancy

Dr. Alan Greene, author of From First Kicks to First Steps (McGraw-Hill, 2004) and founder of DrGreene.com isn't so sure, but he applauds the work of Dr. Aizenman in bringing this question to the national forefront.
"One of the most important lessons from this story is that we need more information on chemicals that become a common part of consumers' lives," says Dr. Greene. "In the meantime, it makes sense to me for pregnant women to avoid occupational exposure to this chemical where possible (whether in shampoo manufacturing or any other manufacturing plant). And I might consider using a different shampoo during pregnancy."
Dr. Tom Natan is a research director for the National Environmental Trust, a non-profit organization established in 1994 to inform citizens about environmental problems and how they affect our health and quality of life. He believes pregnant women would be surprised at how many chemicals they are exposed to every day and not only about the amount of chemicals, but that the same chemicals show up in so many different products.
"There is a perception that if a manufacturer markets a product, the company will have proven the product is safe," says Dr. Natan. "Unfortunately, that requirement doesn't exist anywhere in our chemical regulatory system, except with pesticides. And even if a particular product is absolutely safe if used as directed, no single manufacturer has considered that someone using that product is also usin many other products with the same chemicals."
