Determining If Your Child Should Receive an Allowance

By Allen Martin

If $1 per year of age per week sounds like a great deal, have them use the money for the future. For example, have them give some of the money to charity. Have them give some of the money to the family cause, and force them to put some of it into the bank.

The bottom line is not to simply give your child an allowance regardless of how much you decide is appropriate. Use this money to teach positive money habits and lessons.

Chores for Cash?

Some parents wonder if they should make their child perform chores, such as setting the table or cleaning their room, in exchange for an allowance. While it is up to each parent to decide what chores are appropriate for their child, many experts agree that giving children responsibilities around the house is a good idea. Whether or not you choose to compensate them for their chores is up to you. You may keep chores and allowance entirely separate, so kids don't think of it as being paid for chores. Or you may choose to tell kids they will not get an allowance if they don't do chores.
