Beginner Sewing Projects

Looking for some beginner sewing projects to get you or your child started? Try one of these!

Dog Toy

Tobi-Dawne Yandt, 26, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, is teaching her younger sister to sew and offered this dog toy beginner project. Easily done, it gives the beginner a sense of accomplishment and confidence to try something larger.

Take a square of fabric (varied in size based on the size of the dog) and fold it in half with the right sides together. Sew shut two of the sides. Turn it right side out, and stuff it with your choice of stuffing. Sew shut the last side. Using fun fur also means you don't see the messy outside stitching on the last side.

Pillowcases

Another easy project for beginners that will also offer them big savings is making pillowcases.

Choose an inexpensive cotton material. For beginners, solids are best because you don't have to worry about matching up obvious patterns on the fabric. You will need approximately 1 yard per pillowcase for king-sized pillows. Carefully cut down the entire length of the fold. Take one piece of the material and fold it long ways with right sides together until the ends match up.

Pin the long sides together and then stitch 5/8 inch from the side edges. You should have two stitched sides, one end that has a fold and then one open end. Turn 1/2 inch of the opened end edge over all the way around the end, pin and then stitch.

Place whatever pillow you will be using inside the pillowcase. Turn end over once again and pin at desired length. Take pillow out and stitch the finished hem. Turn right side out, insert pillow and enjoy. The finished pillowcase can be left as is or decorated with lace, embroidery or appliqu豮
