Saving Money by Sewing

Cavanaugh also found sewing maternity items to be a great savings. "Maternity clothes are so expensive! I was able to make myself two pairs of pants, three shirts and a dress for what it would have cost to buy just one outfit at regular price. Granted, most of the fabric was in the clearance section but it was stuff I would have bought anyway so it wasn't a compromise."

John L. Stanffenberg, a supervisor at Hancock Fabrics in Humble, Texas, not only makes all his own clothes, he also designs them for himself and others. His formals have even been seen at the Miss Texas Pageants.

While the idea of sewing is usually associated with clothes, it isn't in any way restricted to that small niche. "We are seeing a great many people coming in and buying home d袯r fabrics," says Stanffenberg. "So many have gotten $25,000 or higher estimates from decorators and realize they can do it themselves for $6,000 or even less."
