Waging a War Against Aging
The Latest in Anti-Aging Techniques
By Teri Brown
It is Dr. Barber's mission to transmit that passion to others. He suggests to his patients and in his book that people need to approach life with the idea that it has meaning, as well as to believe in something and have a passion for something.
Your daily habits will prove to be your savior or your undoing when it comes to aging, says Dr. Barber. The diseases of aging are predicated on myriad factors: the most controllable being smoking and weight control. Right now in the United States, two-thirds of our population is overweight. According to Dr. Barber, one out of every three children born in 2002 is going to have diabetes in their lifetime directly related to being overweight. So many problems that age us – from asthma to diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancers – are now associated with being overweight. Those who smoke will likely face cancer, lung disease, heart disease and stroke.
If our bad habits can age us more quickly, can good habits help slow the effects of aging? Dr. Barber believes so. Nutrition, weight management and guarding your life from chronic stress are all on Dr. Barber's list of good habits to encourage.
"Stress puts us in a constant state of fight versus flight reaction," says Dr. Barber. "Our bodies are so primed up that we overuse our abilities to heal ourselves. Stresses can be anywhere from our diet to our lack of sleep to the stresses we have at our workplace. We have to find ways to reduce stress."
