We should also look at things to help us relax. Examples may be painting, caring for a pet or enjoying the outdoors. Learning to relax is one of the most tremendous ways to relieve the stresses of our lives. "Also, don't forget to learn to laugh at yourself," says Dr. Barber. "Don't look at life as something that is so serious all the time. Discover that life does have meaning, that it does have humor. Accept it and start laughing at things in and around your life."

Time for Change

Wendy Marquez from Greenlawn, N.Y., found that stress was making her old fast. After being in banking for more than 20 years she knew it was time for a change. "The job was so stressful – I think it was taking years off of my life," says Marquez. "I was in the very, very fortunate position to have the ability to leave, but I now know, looking back, that it was a matter of leaving soon or not be here at all."

Marquez has spent the past four years totally revamping her life. Now, at 45, she exercises regularly and has never felt stronger and firmer. "I have no doubt that the combination of exercise and diet changes have made a huge impact on my health and well-being," says Marquez.

"There is only one way to affect the future and that's to create it," says Dr. Barber. "We have to create it ourselves. There is no magic bullet. We have to take control of our lives."
