Shiatsu
A Healthy Balance By Lyn Mettler
Since then, she has visited a practitioner regularly and says it has changed her life. Chriswell says it has not only cured health problems like a sore hip that didn't respond to traditional medicine, but also has helped her mentally and emotionally by teaching her to quiet her mind and meditate.
"Shiatsu can treat almost anything," says Thompson. "As well as addressing particular problems, Shiatsu treatment will usually also restore energy, release tension, promote relaxation and generally engender a feeling of well-being."
While many confuse Shiatsu with massage, a Shiatsu session is quite different. First, those receiving Shiatsu do not need to remove any clothing, as may be expected for a massage session. "With its deep, pressure-point approach, Shiatsu leaves a more profound, below-the-surface effect than regular massage techniques," says Thompson. "To many clients, the opportunity to be treated while clothed is a plus." Recipients typically lay on a futon-type mat on the floor and may be asked to remove their jewelry and shoes. The practitioner usually begins by talking with the client about any specific problems that need to be addressed during the session.
