The Price Tag
Here's a look at some of what you could expect to spend on certain items:

  • Strollers – Expect to pay $12 to $20 for an umbrella or "mall" stroller and an average of $125 for a sturdier stroller. If you'd like the stroller to accommodate your car seat's infant carrier, expect to pay more.
  • Highchairs – Though you can find chairs as low as $40, expect to pay between $80 and $100 for a sturdy model.
  • Bath Tub – Expect to pay about $15 for a plastic bathtub with all the safety features.
  • Diaper Disposal Unit – For those who prefer not to use a regular trashcan for their dirty diapers, diaper disposal units cost about $20. For many you'll also have to purchase the bags that go inside. Expect to pay another $150 per year for this.
  • Slings and Baby Carriers – If you'll be wearing your baby, expect to pay about $60 for a good sturdy baby carrier. Premium brands can cost up to $200.
  • Play Yards – Not your mother's playpen! Today's play yards come with changing tables and bassinets. Expect to pay about $100 for all of the above.
  • Changing Table – Depending on your needs, changing tables can be a simple table with four legs and a storage shelf underneath, or they can be dressers with a changing area on top. Expect to pay $150 for a simple model and about $100 more for one with drawers and shelves.
