Care for Your Skin
Your basic skin care regimen should include cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and sun block. One of the best ways to find out which type of skin care you need is to make an appointment with an aesthetician. Not only is getting a facial a luxurious way to start your personal makeover, but they also know which skin care products are best for your skin. Most ethical aestheticians will suggest several different product lines, not just the one they happen to sell.

There also are several new non-surgical skin care procedures. Dr. Jon Mendelsohn, co-author of The Non-Surgical Facelift Book: A Guide to Facial Rejuvenation Procedures (Addicus, 2003), outlines a few of the new techniques available:

  • Microdermabrasion This painless procedure, which uses air-powered crystals, removes the outer layer of dead, flaking skin and stimulates the production of fresh skin and underlying collagen. It gives you brighter, younger-looking skin, diminishes sun damage, fine lines and mild scaring and improves overall skin texture.
  • Chemical peel Chemical peels remove fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and freckling. They also improve sun-damaged skin and give you a smoother skin texture. The doctor applies a mild acid solution, which lifts away the damaged surface skin.
  • Soft tissue filler Soft tissue fillers fill in facial grooves and creases, smoothing them and blending them into the rest of your skin. Fillers are used for creases in the cheeks, forehead lines, crow's feet, smil lines, frown lines and wrinkles around the lips. Both temporary and permanent filler materials are available.
