4 Steps to Financing Fertility

By Laura Christianson

Dr. Adamson also recommends investigating companies that offer affordable treatment packages, financing plans and refund guarantees, such as ARC's Three-cycle Plus™ plan. "A 30-year-old has a better than 80 percent chance of bringing a baby home when trying for three IVF cycles," says Dr. Adamson. (A 35-year-old has a better than 70 percent chance for a live birth.)

Patients who purchase the ARC Refund Guarantee are refunded for professional services and medications in the event that they don't have a live birth after three cycles. One of ARC's clients, who received a refund, says, "It's too bad we weren't successful, but at least we didn't have to deal with the aggravation of trying to get our money back."

4. Connect with Others.

People who have been through fertility treatment agree that education is the key to finding affordable treatment. "The more resources you have, the better," says Cafero. She recommends networking with friends, fertility advocacy groups such as RESOLVE and online.

Peterson scoured Internet message boards and chat rooms, seeking support. "I learned so many things, including what questions to ask my doctor," she says. "I'm hiring a doctor to work for me; I want to be as informed as possible about my treatment options so we can address them together."

Dr. Adamson agrees. "You can't beat good information," he says. "If people find really good physicians, develop a plan based on good science and take advantage of financing solutions, the vast majority of them have a good chance of getting the family they want."
