Expert Q&A

By Deborah Z. Altschuler
Lice Expert

My niece has continually had head lice for almost two months now and I am due to have my baby in about two weeks. Can my baby get lice from her holding him?

It is always a possibility for an infested person to communicate lice to another person, including a baby if the baby has a considerable amount of hair.

The ideal scenario would be for the niece's mother to ensure that her daughter is lice and nit free no matter what and especially before she visits the new mommy and baby. The NPA encourages routine screening, early detection and the earliest possible removal of lice and nits as the best way to manage head lice for the child involved and to protect others who may come into contact.

The NPA endorses the LiceMeister comb because it is the gold standard in lice and nit removal tools, and because proceeds from the comb help support the cause to protect children from unnecessary and potentially harmful exposure to pesticidal lice shampoos and lotions."
