Expert Q&A

By Karen Ansel
Nutritionist

I know that eating orange vegetables can sometimes cause a baby's skin to turn orange. Can eating lots of orange vegetables during pregnancy hurt my baby?

Far from harming your baby, orange vegetables are actually good for the two of you. These nutrient powerhouses get their deep orange color from the plant pigment beta-carotene, which is ultimately converted to vitamin A, necessary for bone and tissue development as well as proper vision.

While excessive vitamin A intake has been linked to birth defects, you need not worry about getting too much beta-carotene. When blood levels of vitamin A start to rise, the body compensates by halting the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A.
