Expert Q&A

By Lisa Cipriano Collins

When a child is allergic to peanuts is he usually allergic to other nuts as well?

Most allergists today will advise peanut-allergic individuals to avoid all tree nuts as well and visa-versa. This is due to similar proteins that occur in many tree nuts and peanuts, which could cause a reaction. There is also a high risk of cross-contamination in the processing and packaging of peanuts and tree nuts, sufficient enough to cause a reaction. There also is a high incidence of substitutions made in peanut or tree nut containing products unbeknownst to the consumer, causing an accidental ingestion and reaction."
