My daughter is having trouble reading. What reading exercises can I help her with at home -- without overdoing it and pushing her too much?

As a primary school teacher, I am begging you: Please do not push your child or make reading a negative experience. Reading will happen. I believe the more interaction your child has with print, the easier it will be. READ, READ, READ to your child and with your child.
Make sure your child sees you reading. Modeling reading as a pleasurable activity and an important way to get information is crucial.
Find out what kind of books your child likes and stock up. Does s/he like mysteries, animal stories, books about trains, planes or dolls?
Go to the library and try new authors. Get books that are at her reading level and not too difficult; her teacher can help you with selecting appropriate authors.
Who says your child is having trouble reading? If it is her teacher, ask him or her to make age-appropriate suggestions. If your child is in kindergarten, first or second grade, just enjoy the reading time you have together!
