Expert Q&A

By Christopher S. Cooper, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.S.
Associate Professor at the University of Iowa
Director of Pediatric Urology for the Children's Hospital of Iowa

At what age should a child be able to stay dry throughout the night?

More than 80 percent of children will be dry by age 5. Of the remaining children, about 15 percent a year will spontaneously outgrow bedwetting. I routinely don't recommend beginning treatment for bedwetting until age 6, but others will begin at age 5.
