Expert Q&A

How can staying physically fit help me deal with incontinence?

Exercise can help keep muscles strong and also keep weight in a normal range. Specific exercises, such as Kegels, for the pelvic floor are very important for keeping the muscles that support the pelvic organs strong.

As many as one-third of women who exercise experience some degree of stress incontinence during running or other activities as a result of weak support of the bladder neck. A fit body is better able to respond to the exercises that can help strengthen the pelvic floor (Kegels). A positive body image, provided by exercise, may help to encourage you to find support and treatment."
