Christopher S. Cooper, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.S.

Associate Professor at the University of Iowa
Director of Pediatric Urology for the Children's Hospital of Iowa

As a pediatric urologist, Dr. Cooper's goals are three-fold: to make a difference in the lives of children with disorders of the genitourinary system, to perform practical research that can be translated into everyday clinical practice and to educate medical students and residents in order to promote the advancement of the field of pediatric urology. One of his primary research focuses involves minimizing discomfort in the treatment of children with genitourinary disorders. Dr. Cooper and his clinical team have published several nationally-recognized studies which point out the need for a better understanding of children's special needs when it comes to disorders of the urinary system and treatment procedures.

A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Dr. Cooper graduated from the University of Iowa College of medicine in 1991, where he was awarded the Nathan G. Alcock Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Urology. In 1997 he completed the University of Iowa urology residency program after receiving an Outstanding Teaching Award from medical students and the Iowa Urologic Society.

Dr. Cooper subsequently completed a two-year pediatric urology fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. During this fellowship, he was the recipient of an American Foundation for Urologic Disease and American Urologic Association research scholarship. He was subsequently awarded the first Frank Hinman, Jr. Award for clinical research by the Society for Pediatric Urology. Following completion of his fellowship he was recruited back to the University of Iowa, where his practice focuses exclusively on pediatric urology at the Children's Hospital of Iowa. He currently serves as director of the Pediatric Urology Division at the University of Iowa and the Children's Hospital of Iowa.

Dr. Cooper is a member of the American Association of Pediatric Urologists, American Academy of Pediatrics Affiliate Section on Urology, the Society for Fetal Urology, the Society for Pediatric Urology, the American College of Surgeons, the International Children's Continence Society, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and the American Urological Association. He was also recently elected to a four-year term as secretary/treasurer for the Society for Fetal Urology and serves as editorial consultant for numerous medical journals.
