CRAYOLA CRAYON

This simple costume can be done in any color your little one wants! And what’s even better, the sweat suit is not altered in any way and can be reused. This costume has three simple sections and does not require a sewing machine (although it is helpful). Great for a girl or boy; in fact, you could make a whole box of crayons!

Crayola Crayon

Supplies:

  • Any color sweat suit with hood
  • 1/4 yard of material that matches sweat suit
  • 1/4 yard of black material
  • 6 squares of felt, one shade darker than the sweat suit
  • 1/4 yard of “wonder under”
  • Needle and black thread
  • 2-foot strip of Velcro (self-adhesive, if not using sewing machine)
  • Stretchy gloves or mittens that match sweat suit

Instructions:

Tip of Crayon:
CostumeThe tip of the crayon is a pointed hat for your child to wear over the sweat suit hood. Draw a large triangle on a piece of paper (remember, you are trying to make a hat for your child). Take two pieces of felt and draw the triangle on each piece. Make the triangle as long as you can get it (one point is the tip of the hat); you can cut the excess later once you’ve tried it on your child’s head. Sew a seam from the tip of the hat down each side of the triangle, leaving the bottom open. Turn it inside out and try it on your child’s head. Mark where it should be cut if it is too long. Measure the width of the bottom of the hat and multiply that number by two. Next, cut a 1 ½-inch strip of black material that will go around the bottom rim of the hat, using the measurement you just took. Next, on a piece of paper, draw a squiggle line that is ¼ inch wide (see diagram). Cut this line out and use it as your pattern. Draw the long edges onto the colored material, and then remove the pattern and line it up next to the one you just drew. Draw the long edges again, and continue this process until you have a squiggle line that is as long as the black strip you just cut. Be sure to save the squiggle pattern; you will need it for the boot covers.

You will use “wonder under” to attach the black strip to the bottom of the hat, and to attach the squiggle line on top of the black strip. Follow the instructions on the package of wonder under. You will need an iron, ironing board and a damp cloth. Once you’ve attached everything, the tip of the crayon is done!

Crayola Label:
DiagramThe label goes around your child’s trunk. Measure your child’s trunk from under the arms to just below the belt line. Next, measure your child’s waist. Add 2 inches to this last measurement. Cut a piece of colored fabric using these measurements (should be a square or rectangle). Wrap the fabric around your child while he or she is wearing the sweatshirt, making sure it will fit snugly. Attach the Velcro to the edges that will meet in the back of your child’s body when you wrap this material around him or her. Attach the Velcro by sewing it on, or use the self-adhesive type. Next, draw a large oval on a piece of paper (you will probably need to use newspaper to get the large oval to fit). The oval should be as long as the measurement of your child’s trunk (from under the arms to the belt line). Lay this paper down on the black fabric and cut out the oval. Use wonder under to attach it to the colored fabric, directly in the center of the fabric, so the oval is vertical. (See photo).

Next, draw out the Crayola letters onto paper. If you have a word processor, try finding a font that looks like the one used on the real Crayola crayons, then enlarge it. Print out a sheet of these letters and use them as your pattern. You may have to experiment with sizes before you find one that will fit just right. You want the letters to be fairly close together, and to take up the entire length of the oval. (See photo). Lay the letters on the colored fabric and trace them on. Cut them out and use wonder under to stick them onto the oval. The Crayola label is done!

Boot Covers:
DiagramThe boot covers are made from the remaining felt. Measure your child’s shoes or boots (NOT your child’s foot) from heel to toe. Next, draw a large boot shape onto a piece of paper, making sure it is about an inch too big. Once you have a pattern that looks right when held up to the boot, draw the pattern onto the four remaining pieces of felt. Cut the boot shapes out and pair two together, and the other two together. Sew a ½-inch seam from the tip of the boot up to the ankle line, and then stitch the back of the boot cover. (See diagram.) Crayon FootYour child should be able to slip them over the boots, leaving the bottom and top open. Next, measure the width of the top of the boot cover and multiply it by two. Cut a 1 ½-inch strip of black material, using that measurement. Then copy the squiggle pattern onto the remaining colored material until you have a squiggle line that is as long as the black strip. Attach the black strip onto the top of each boot cover with wonder under and then attach the colored squiggle. This should look just like what you did to the hat. The boot covers are done!

TIPS

  • Lay your letters on the black oval and arrange where they should be before you start attaching them.
  • Look for sweat suits at the thrift store.
