POCAHONTAS COSTUME

Don’t miss our fairy costume!

Pocahontas is a great costume for girls who want to show their adventurous side! This costume is simple to make, and can be hand-stitched if you don’t have a sewing machine.

Pocahontas

Supplies:

  • 1 yard brown flannel fabric
  • Indian-print ribbon or rick-rack
  • Pinking shears
  • Fabric glue
  • Needle and brown thread
  • Small piece of Velcro

Instructions:

The Dress:
DiagramsMeasure your child around the waist and add about 4 inches. Then, measure your child from the shoulder down to about 3 inches below her knee. Write down these measurements. Fold the flannel fabric in half. Lay the fabric on the floor or on a large table. To make cutting the pattern out easier, draw the pattern onto a piece of heavy paper, then lay it on the fabric and lightly trace around the paper with a pencil. Cut the pattern with a slant from your child's right shoulder so that the dress is held on by one shoulder and sleeveless on the other side. (See photo and diagram.) Cut the bottom of the dress, leaving a point in the middle on both the front and the back. Stitch up both sides of the dress, leaving the top shoulder strap. Turn dress inside out. Sew or glue a piece of Velcro to both sides of the shoulder strap (you can get Velcro circles or squares that have tacky substance on the back -- ask your fabric store clerk).

Fringes and Finishing Touches:
With pinking shears, cut slits all around the bottom of the dress to fringe it. Cut a strip of fabric from the remaining material about 4 inches wide and long enough to go from the top of the child's shoulder all the way around, under the arm and back to the shoulder. With your pinking shears, cut slits halfway through to fringe it. Sew this around the top of the dress. Cut the rick-rack or ribbon long enough to go around the top of the dress, on top of the fringed material. Cut another piece of rick-rack or ribbon to go over the "V" fringe along the bottom of the dress. Attach this by sewing it on or gluing it. If you desire, you can also cut a piece of leftover fabric out to make a belt to tie around the child's waist.

TIPS

  • Take a piece of the ribbon or rick-rack and make a headband.
  • Fabric glue makes this costume a snap to make.
  • For an extra touch, you could also add Indian beads to the fringe around the neck and along the bottom.
  • Accessorize with an Indian pouch and moccasins.
