Ross Stores Recalls Turtle Sprinklers Due to Laceration Hazard

Name of Product: Turtle Sprinklers

Importer: Ross Stores Inc., Pleasanton, Calif.

Hazard: The turtle's body can fill with water, causing it to crack or explode, posing a laceration hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report of the turtle sprinkler cracking. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The turtle sprinkler is made of plastic resin and measures about 6 1/2 inches tall. The SKU number 400022708494 is printed on a label located on the underside of the sprinkler.

Sold at: Ross Stores and dd's Discounts nationwide from March 2007 through September 2007 for about $9. They were manufactured in China.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the sprinkler immediately, and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Collections Etc. Inc. Announces Recall of Double Hammocks

Name of Product: Double Hammocks

Importer: Collections Etc. Inc., of Elk Grove Village, Ill.

Manufacturer: Transfar International Corp., of Taipei, Taiwan

Hazard: The wooden rods at the head and foot of the hammock used to extend the fabric can break, causing the hammock to collapse and the user to fall to the ground.

Incidents: Collections Etc. is aware of five reports of the wooden rods breaking, resulting in four reports of injuries including minor cuts and sore necks and backs.

Description: This recall involves hammocks made with a solid green fabric and white support ropes. The hammocks' green fabric measures 73 inches long by 46 inches wide and supports a maximum of up to 350 pounds.

Sold through: Web sites and catalogs nationwide from May 2007 through August 2007 for about $20. They were manufactured in Taiwan.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the hammocks immediately and contact Collections Etc. for a full refund.

Christmas Tree Shops Recalls Glitter Candles Due to Fire Hazard

Name of Product: Sequin Glitter Candles

Distributor: Christmas Tree Shops Inc., of South Yarmouth, Mass.

Hazard: The candle's exterior glitter coating can ignite, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received four reports of flames or smoke coming from the candle or the exterior coating. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves glitter candles in three styles.

J.C. Penney Recalls Breyer Stirrup Ornaments Due to Lead

Name of Product: Breyer 2006 Stirrup Ornaments

Hazard: Surface paints on the ornaments contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. No injuries or incidents have been reported.

Description: The recall involves a stirrup-shaped ornament with a white prancing horse and blue ribbons. "2006" is stamped on the rim of the ornament.

Sold through: The J.C. Penney catalog and Web site from August 2006 through August 2007 for about $18. They were manufactured in China.

Remedy: Consumers should keep the ornament away from young children and return it to any J.C. Penney store for a full refund.

Hayes Company Inc. Recalls Outdoor Candles

Name of Product: "Avant Yarde" Decorative Glaze Outdoor Candles

Importer/Distributor: The Hayes Company Inc., of Valley Center, Kan.

Hazard: The candle's wax can catch fire, causing a high flame, which poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received two reports of consumers who suffered minor burns to their hands when they tried to extinguish flames coming from the candle.

Description: The recall involves three styles of outdoor citronella candles with a glazed lower portion that is brown, blue or green. The item number 18134 can be located on the top left part of the label on the bottom of the candle.

Sold at: Ace Hardware stores nationwide from February 2006 through June 2007 for about $8. Candles were manufactured in China.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled candles immediately and return them to any Ace Hardware store for a full refund.

Outdoor Lounge Chairs Sold at Lowe's Stores Recalled

Name of Product: Garden Treasures Cloud 9 Beyond Chairs

Importer: L G Sourcing, Inc., of North Wilkesboro, N.C.

Manufacturer: Taizhou Yongjiang Arts and Crafts Collective Ltd., of China

Hazard: The chair can break when in the reclined position, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: L G Sourcing, Inc. has received seven reports of the chairs breaking when in the reclined position, resulting in minor injuries such as bruising to the back, hips, shoulders, arms and a torn ligament.

Description: This recall involves the Garden Treasures Cloud 9 Beyond outdoor lounge chairs. The chairs are tan in color, have a light steel frame, cloth seat, a pillow at the headrest and an adjustable sun visor.

Sold at: Lowe's retail outlet stores nationwide from December 2006 through April 2007 for about $60. Chairs were manufactured in China.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the chairs immediately and return them to any Lowe's retail outlet to receive a full refund.

Folding Chairs Sold at Cost Plus World Market Stores Recalled

Name of Product: Bistro Chairs

Distributor: Cost Plus Inc., of Oakland, Calif.

Hazard: The chairs can collapse due to faulty rivets, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Cost Plus is aware of seven incidents in which the chairs collapsed, including one report of a minor injury.

Description: The metal painted folding chairs were sold in four colors, red, blue, white and green. SKU numbers 390225, 390228, 390229 and 390230 are printed on the sales receipt.

Sold at: Cost Plus World Market stores nationwide from January 2007 through June 2007 for about $50. Chairs were manufactured in Taiwan.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled chairs immediately and return them to any Cost Plus World Market store for a full refund.

The Toro Company Recalls Electric Blowers

Name of Product: Toro Power Sweep Electric Blowers

Manufacturer: The Toro Company, of Bloomington, Minn.

Hazard: The blower's impeller, which is a rotating component on the blower, can break, resulting in pieces of plastic flying out of the blower. This poses a risk of serious injury to the user or a bystander.

Incidents/Injuries: Toro has received 154 reports of broken impellers, including 21 reports of minor cuts and bruises resulting from projected impeller pieces.

Description: The recall involves Toro Power Sweep electric blower model 51586 that was manufactured between 2000 and 2002. The electric blowers have serial numbers that range between 000055100 and 220255609. There are two decals on the main housing of the blower. One decal reads, "TORO Power Sweep" and the decal on the opposite side of the blower contains the model number and serial number. The recalled units can be identified by a black impeller fan, which can be seen through the air inlet screen on the bottom of the unit.

Sold Through: Toro dealers and various mass retailers nationwide including The Home Depot, Lowes, Target and K-Mart stores from January 2000 through late December 2002 for about $32. They were manufactured in the United States.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled blowers immediately and contact Toro to receive a replacement blower.

Additional Incidents Prompt Log Splitter Recall Expansion

Name of Product: Log Splitters

Units: About 8,000 (4,000 additional units were recalled in February 2005)

Manufacturer: Brave Products Inc., of Streator, Ill.

Hazard: The log splitter's hydraulic cylinders can have defective rod retention, causing the seals to leak and the rods to detach. This can result in serious injury to the operator, as the rod can rapidly and unexpectedly extend the splitting wedge.

Incidents/Injuries: Brave Products has received 59 additional reports of leaking cylinders and/or rod retention failure. One consumer reported a hand amputation that could have been caused by this cylinder defect.

Description: The log splitters are made of steel and painted orange and black, or blue and black. They have trailer hitches and rubber tires. Each log splitter has a decal on the side that reads "Brave Products, Inc." or "Iron & Oak" and "__ ton" (either 15, 22, 26 or 34). The Brave Products or Iron & Oak models included in the recall can be found here. The serial number is located on the hydraulic tank.

Sold at: Ace, True Value and Do It Best Hardware stores and independent power equipment dealers nationwide from January 2002 through October 2004, and from May 2006 through April 2007, for between $900 and $2,000. They were manufactured in the United States.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled log splitters and contact Brave Products Inc. to receive a free replacement cylinder.

Black & Decker Recalls Trimmers/Edgers Due to Laceration Hazard

Name of Product: Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edgers

Manufacturer: Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc., of Towson, Md.

Hazard: The trimmer/edger's spool, spool cap and pieces of trimmer string can come loose during use and become airborne projectiles, posing a laceration hazard to the user as well as bystanders. The trimmer/edgers can also overheat posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Black & Decker has received 707 reports of incidents, including 58 reports of injuries. Serious injuries included cuts to two consumers' legs that required medical attention. Minor injuries included bruises, lacerations and facial injuries such as a welt and broken skin over a consumer's eye. There were also reports of property damage, including two broken windows.

Description: The Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmers/Edgers are electric-powered. Trimmer/edgers with date codes 200546 through 200645 (representing manufacture dates of November 14, 2005, through November 6, 2006) are included in this recall. The date code is located on the underside of the trimmer/edger's handle. Only trimmers with black spools caps are included in the recall. Those with orange spool caps are not included in the recall.

Sold at: Major home center and hardware stores nationwide from November 2005 through January 2007 for about $70. They were manufactured in China.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the string trimmers/edgers immediately and contact Black & Decker for a free repair kit.
