JMO..sorry I didn't address your post--my computers been doing weird stuff lately or maybe it just needed refreshed! Glad I made you smile :-) and yes we'll have to figure out a way to chat sometime!
I said I wasn't gonna' do this, but here goes anywayz..I really don't think being a racist has anything to do with being liberal, conservative, dem or repub--it is a state of mind. And just to set the record straight I am a recovering Dem that voted for Bush! Being very family oriented, I was apauled and embarrassed by what Clinton did while in office! I'll tell you what, if you really want to go head to head on politics and racial stuff, drop into the Yahoo chat in the Gov and Politics chatroom #1 anytime, but mostly after 10:00pm..it is abit more "realtime" than this parenting board and I'm sure you'll get the fight you might have been looking for! Good Luck!!!

Sure celebrities can use award ceremonies for whatever they want! It is their 18 seconds of fame and let them say what they wish! Although I would use the time personally to thank those who helped me achieve my award, but it is a FREE country with FREEdom of speech!

Angela..I dunno much about tanning while pregnant, but my personal advice would not be to chance it!Since you only have about 2-months to wait, my suggestion would be to put it off, enjoy that beautiful pregnancy "glow" and delight in the fact that you have the most happiest reason in the world to be abit "fat"--that was one of my favs!LOL

"dara" I am happy you are "light" skin if that is what you want me to say. But unfortunately I am a darker olive skinned Greek fresh off the islands at age 3, so I don't know of the lightness you speak of. I am blessed to tan the first 20 minutes of the summer weather. This made my modeling career take off in the 80's.
"shawanda" thank you to your husband for serving. My father joined the military in Greece then only to try in America and was rejected! Can you believe it! They didn't want him, so he decided to go to college and become a banker instead. Quite better option financially for us don't you think? Anyway, I have 2 people serving there myself that I know and thank them from the bottom of my heart for serving OUR country.
Yes I live here and yes I am against same sex "marriages" having children, but that doesn't make me any less American. Sorry to you ladies who think so. Whether you want to admit it or not, the US HAS become to PC and it is a shame. Everyone has to walk on egg shells around perfect strangers for fear of "insulting" them and I can say this from experience because of where I live. I also have been to a safari to Africa and let me tell you the "true" africians ARE different, but in a good way. I would go into more detail but after reading the posts this morning, I can see that you ignorant people wouldn't understand my perspective.

LH, SHAWANDA, DARA, ANGELA, AF BRAT...
thanks for the support ladies! i have decided this morning to take a huge deep breath before i read the posts, and an ever bigger breath before replying! i have also decided not to respond to certain posts, as they only succeed in raising my blood pressure and making me want to scream! it's just not worth the aggravation is it??
so with that said...
ANGELA, about the tanning beds while pregnant. i don't claim to know for sure whether it's safe or not, but i'm guessing not really. i know you'd only go a couple times a week, but my understanding is that tanning beds "cook your insides". i wouldn't risk it if i were you UNLESS your ob/gyn gives you the go ahead. perhaps i'm not the most informed about this, so don't take my word for it!
but an alternative to tanning beds is this new uv free "airbrushing". i've been a couple of times, just trying to get a head start on my summer tan! they just spray the tanner all over you and it can last 7-10 days. see if you can find somewhere that offers that around you.
LH, well you have never failed to make me smile! you glow?? you are too funny....hey it's better to glow than to walk around red and sunburnt right?? i'm quite lucky that i don't really sunburn as i have like olive brown skin....but my daughter? whoa, talk about fair. we go out for a walk and she burns! i'm going to have to dunk her in sunscreen this summer for sure!!
i also liked your stories LH, that's brilliant that you are able to visit different places and interact with different cultures and people. it's the only way we'll be able to fully appreciate others and their differences, cultures, and their similiarities!
anyway all, i should tend to my household for a while...
after all that frustration i experienced last nite, i would like to end this post with a note to all those whose loved ones are in iraq fighting for freedom....thank you, thank you, thank you. thank you for your courage, thank you for your strength while your loved one is overseas, thank you for your optimism. may god bless all of you and keep you strong during this time of crisis and bring your loved ones HOME!!
have a good day

You are entitled to your opinion. it doesn't make me a liberal because I believe that humans are human beings. As I mentioned I am of a diverse racial background. i don't care what people think and never have. I don't want to bash you. Right now my husband and others are in the Iraqi regions defending your right to speak your mind, and in the process of giving the Iraqi people that same right.
You go! Say what you like and do what you please. This is America! Please don't think that I was trying censor you. I was only giving another perspective.

That is what is wrong with the world today!!! Terriosim, religion, war....
How about keeping in mind that we as Americans have to much crap going on right now to not get along as human beings. To have xxxxxxxx like yourselve making comments on race!!!!!!!!
I have your back JMO....
And another thing, none of us are all one race due to our ancestors being of different cultures!!!! I am mixed White, Irish, German and probably more and I consider myself to be just an AMERICAN!!!!!!

Goodness!! VIEWER is proof positive that our Constitution works....it DOES protect all freedom of speech, even that which is stupid! And I don't usually say people or their opinions are stupid either...I work with small children and spend a lot of time telling three-year-olds why "stupid" is a bad word. Anyway--LH, I too am VERY fair skinned, and I loved the comparison to being so light you "glow." :) Since we are so fair skinned, do you think we are "light" enough to be part of VIEWER'S elite circle of friends? (That was sarcasm!):) UGH! I had a question for you though, since we are still patiently waiting for the question to change on this board--you mentioned tanning to prepare for the summer. I usually tan in the spring too, otherwise I will literally blister my first day out in the sun. Do you know--can pregnant women use tanning beds? I am seven months along, and I know it sounds like a "duh" question, but I have talked to a couple of salon owners who say tanning systems have improved, and that they are quite safe. I usually tan just twice a week in the spring, just to get a "base" tan so I don't burn so badly, but I also think tanning is vey relaxing(the heat, the fans, etc.) Anyway, I have to get to work. Hope to see a new topic later today! :)Until then, we can just all "chat" with each other about whatever...kind of like a "coffee clutch" except we can't see each other. :) Take care all.

Thanx Dara!I had hoped to stop in here this morn with a new question and all the ugly postings GONE!(MODERATORS..yoo-hooo.where are u?How about a new question please..anything?!)
My daughter (16) laughs at me for conversing so very often with my "imaginary" friends on the net-LOL-this as she eagerly awaits her chance to get on her AOL! I have struck up some very REAL friendships here and there and we stay in touch often!(Penpals for grown-ups--yeah!!!)
JMO..I would love to chat with you sometime..somehow..but never put any personal info in here or elsewhere as I wouldn't do it either!Maybe we can figure out a way..maybe meet in a chatroom or something..(I think iparenting has chat, but I often go into Yahoo chat too!)I think I could offer an insight on the postings of last night..but do not feel comfortable posting them as they are very personal..and I also enjoy your posts too!!
I am comming into a VERY busy week so might not be on here as much as usual (LOL)..weather is getting warmer and spring cleaning awaits..daughters track meets have begun and she is learning to drive and has new boyfriend..several school meetings to attend (post secondary ed already..and she is only a freshman!)..and my parents, the "snowbirds"are returning home from their winter in Florida this wknd!WHEW!!Not to mention all those other little thingys that will pop up! Welp..time for another cup o oe for this girl..soo, I'll check back in the afternoon!! TC :-)

Viewer,
I have to stand with Jmo on her views. You are an arrogant, self-rightous, overbearing twit! I am married to a black man, and we have a beautiful baby girl. I also have an all "white" child by my first husband. There is NOTHING wrong with either of my girls. It sounds to me like you are lacking something in your life, and you have to lash out irrationally in order to TRY to compensate for that.
As for the different hair styles...Yes, black and white hair is different, but hell, anyone can wear any hairstyle, no matter who it was "designed" for. Just because hair texture is differen't doesn't mean that they can't do the same things with their hair.
Now, as for Eminem...I'm not too fond of him, but I don't think he should be banned. If you actually sit and listen to some of his songs, they ave good points. Hell, one song asks where the parents are when the kids are doing everything wrong. You can't blame an entertainer for something your kid does, no matter what the song says. It's up to the Parent to watch the child, and to prevent things from happening.
Jmo, you ROCK! :) So do you, LH. I enjoy reading your posts. :)

So you go to church huh..I find THAT very hard to believe! Your words are pure HATERED!! You "reported" me? Please. I thought this was an opinion "sound off board". That is what I was doing, giving my opinion about a TV show! You really need to relax, take a valium or St. Johns wort...
I can understand you taking offense to something if it was aimed at you, but I was not calling YOU a "wiggie" or whatever the term is. I just happened to overhear some pre-teens near our apartment calling it that. And it is not a swear word, at least not that I know of! So chill out! Go to bed or something. And again, I think the TV show should get rid of that DORIAN guy, he has to go not because he is black, but because he is ARROGANT! Haven't any of you seen the show? It used to be a really really good show!

to answer your numbered points:
1)I am happy to hear that your sister was married to all her men. It is good to have less bastard children in the world.
2)you brought up a very good topic here...GAYS HAVING CHILDREN. The worst thing possible in the world to do to a child! I mean, seriously, do you really think that a child can grow up to become a productive person in society being raised by gays/lesbians? NO WAY! The kid is going to be raised gay himself, or to hate men herself. How is the child to know his or her place in a relationship is he/she never watched her parents in the role? I think it is an immoral thing to do to a child and I am totally opposed to it. Just as I am to the school here in New York, public mind you, that no longer made Mother's Day cards. The reason? Because there were some kids who had two fathers! How pathtetic is that? Screw the gays! Let the kids make their Mother's Day cards! That is a slap in the face to us moms! And it is just the beginning. If it is going on here, it will soon spread across the USA! Just watch!
3)There most definitely ARE black/white hairstyles! Have you gone to the Bronx ever or any other urban city to find African hair salons? The reason, because hair type IS different! You don't see white or asian little girls with 3-20 braids in their hair full of beads. Nor do you see a little asian boy with a "pick" in his hair/fro. The styles are different because the hair type is different. Coarser to finer.
4)the term "XXXXX" does not criticize a black person, it is making fun of a white person who sounds uneducated and dresses like a moron. Not only are his pants to his knees he also moves his hands around like an Italian mobster.
5)Have you ever listened to an eminem song? Because if you had you would understand what I am speaking of. Let me describe one of his songs for you. It starts off with him wanting to murder his wife in front of his child and ends with him in jail because he does it. The guy is a sick bastard and should be censored.
Did you over-react? Of course you did. I am not a racist. I have a hispanic cleaning woman and also a black woman in my church. I see nothing wrong with being friends with everyone, but I do hate how people whine and complain how they are "owed" something because they are a different race.

Hi Shawanda,
Burlington Coat Factory is my fav too! We don't have one real close so it is a real treat when we go--I always plan on buying a few things I want and a whole bunch of stuff I don't need!LOL!
I can understand that you probably get angry with people sometimes and face it..some people are just plain hateful! But I have seen women (guys and kids too)with an ethnic look and wondered where they were from too...but have never went up to them to ask and tried not to stare or anything as to not be rude!Maybe the guy wasn't trying to be rude or maybe he was..ya' just never know these days! Personally I have always found people of different cultures and backgrounds sooo interesting!I met a fellow from Pershia (Iran) once and he invited me back to his apartment building for some sort of a party (this was in my younger days when I was alot braver..and not married LOL).When I got there they had beautiful carpets all spread out on the grass in front of the apartments and we sat there till late in the evening talking, listening to their native music, eating some really great grub (still don't know what it was!)that the women had made and eagerly served to the men (most of them didn't sit with us!)and later they brought out the "hookah"and I thought "Oh boy, here I go!",but it was only tobacco and I was only allowed one hit anyway..LOL! Those people and that night will always have a special place in my memories!(Even with this war going on!)
I must tell you that some of that old bravery crept up on me again this past summer when I came across a place on the internet called The Palace of Gold (click it up--it's quite beautiful!!)and it wasn't too far a drive so we (myself, hubby and daughter-16)decided to go check it out! Now we had been warned ahead of time that it was dangerous to go there because it was a Hari Krisna group(spelling?)but we went anyway and I will tell you it was breathtaking! The people, mostly from India, welcomed us,let us watch a religious ceremony, placed flowers around our necks and we just talked to each other and had a good time!We also toured the Palace and it was absolutely georgeous!!At no time did we ever feel threatenend or pressure to join in anything. There have been alot of bad things written about these people and I don't know if any are true or not, but sure made for more great memories and the pictures I took are wonderful!!
Well, sorry to ramble..I don't usually drink coffee at night..and now you know why!!LOLOLOL!!
A funny thought to add for you and JMO..I am so white and fair skinned that sometimes I feel like I glow!LOL..Be thankful you don't have to endure those damn tanning beds that I have begun in prep for summer! TC and God Bless ladies!! :-)

VIEWER......
WHOA. so far i've been calm on this board but i think you've just succeded in boiling my blood..
FIRST of all, who said my sister's children were illegitamite???? i gave no indication whatsoever that she was unmarried or married. NOT THAT IT MATTERS. but for the record, her three sons were born to her and her ex-husband and her daughter was born with her current husband.
SECONDLY, welcome to the new millenium. where families are made up of all different components. lesbians have children, gays have children, single mothers, single fathers, divorced parents. in this day and age, people are more tolerant of blended families and rightly should be. if anyone wants to "scrutinize" my niece because her skin color is a tad darker than that of her brothers, F*&^ them. the fact of the matter is she has a different father from her brothers, but they are still siblings and love each other just as any other siblings do. if people cannot accept the fact that she is mixed and her brothers aren't, that's their problem. my sister didn't choose to fall in love with a black man, she simply chose to fall in love with a man, regardless of his skin color and i applaud her for that.
granted, some mixed children do have a problem because they aren't really sure "what' tehy are. well that is society's fault for placing any sort of emphasis on race to begin with. my niece will understnad her black heritage adn be proud of it, and her white heritage which is a combination of may backgrounds. further more, her white brothers will also be proud of their sister's heritage.
my daughter has two mixed brothers and a mixed sister. shouold my husband have not had a child with me because our child would be "scrutinized" with the children he had already fathered????
THIRDLY, the reason i was joking about putting my daughter's hair in 10 braids was merely because of the comment this person made to my sister about her child's hairstyle making her look black. VIEWER, wake up. there are no "black hairstyles", "white hairstyles" "asian hairstyles". i will put my child's hair in any sort of way i choose and to hell with anyone who thinks i'm trying to make my child look black, green, purple.
FOURTHLY, the term "XXXXX" is offensive, perhaps almost as offensive to the other word that people use in an evil way to describe people of darker skin. if a white person wears the same clothing that a black person wears, is that white person trying to be black???? what determines what clothing is appropriate for a white person vs a black person???
FIFTHLY, while i don't necessarily like what eminem sings about in his rap songs, why "death should come to him...what a loser"??? because he is white and is singing a rap song?? again, what determines what songs are apporpritate and what style of music is ok for white people vs black people???
i take sooo much offense to your short post, it's unreal. i am very hesistant to label anyone a racist because i think that is such a harsh accusation. so perhaps you better consider your comments or that label will very easily befitted to you.
i am proud of my family, i love my "mixed" step children as much as i love my own daughter. i love my niece regardless of her father's color. it's a shame that so many people are so ignorant. what makes the world so beautiful is that people mix with other cultures, races and ethnic backgrounds to create. i refuse to let ANYONE label my child as white or black or whatever. she is a human being, a special one at that, and i am so very proud of my blended family.
please tell me i overreacted. please tell me you are not as your post seemed to imply.......

What is wrong with you for putting 10 braids in your kids hair and what is wrong with your sister having all those illegitimate children? Especially one being with a black man? That child is forever going to be scrutinized compared to her brothers. Half black kids have such a hard time in the world as it is, but I guess it is becoming easier since most of the world seems to become "XXXXX" or is it "XXXXX"...whites trying to act black...all I know is I hate the rap crap that is out there and think death should come to that eminem guy. What a LOSER!

Race obviously has everything to do with it. Why would they replace one black man on the show with another one? If they were trying to "mix" it they would have added an asian or another white guy since they already have the latino, the "older" man, and the "white trash" man on the show. The guy named Dorian just bugs the heck out of me. He is so obviously into himself that it will make me no longer watch a show that I once enjoyed.
Hollywood has made our world PC to the point of puke. Just take the View on ABC. There is the older white woman, the educated black woman, the housewife woman, the annoying jewish woman, and the asian woman. Pretty PC don't you think, plus it is liberal beyond all belief! Just find a good person and put them in it, heck with the PC crap.
And its these individuals who think that the rest of us should listen to them just because their job is on TV. Give me a break.
And Hollywood!!! Get rid of DORIAN! Baywatch did so should "THE OTHER HALF"!

SHAWANDA...
good for you!!! i too look quite ethnic because of my diverse background and i get sooooo frustrated when people try to find out "what" i am. i'm human!!
i once had this man tell me i was "pretty for a white girl" so i told him he was ugly for a black man! in your face!!!
and i get annoyed when i'm with my step-children, who are mixed, and people wonder who these kids possibly could be to me. or when people don't feel that they are my daughter's sister and brother because their skin is darker than hers and their hair is curlier!!!
i have no problem telling friends what my ethnic or racial background is, but strangers????? UGHHHH. it is so stupid and doesn't matter one teeny tiny bit to me what color you are or where your great great great grandparents came from!!!!
another stupid person story? ok, my sister has 3 white sons and 1 mixed daughter, although her daughter has very white skin. she put her hair in 4 ponytails and someone told her she's trying to make her child look black by putting it in so many ponytails! if i was there i would have had to restrain myself from physically assaulting that person! cause first of all, she is half black, secondly does your hairstyle determine your racial mixture????@ just for that i put my white daughter's hair in 10 little braids that day!!!
some people are just so ignorant it makes me sick to my stomach!!!!

What does his race have to do with anything? Sunday, my daughter I went to my favorite store (Burlington Coat Factory) when this man stop me and said to me, " you are a beautiful woman; what are you mixed with or where are you from"?
I said, "American". That's it in a nutshell. I am just plan ol' American. This doesn't mean that I am denying my mother's Jamaican roots or my father's Irish roots. I have decided that I am going to refuse to allow people to place me in a box. This is exactly what you've done with Dorian. Why can't you say that you just hate that arrogant guy? Why do you have to put a race on it?
Me telling that man,who thought that he was complimenting me, made me feel wonderful! And the look on his face was better than becoming a millionaire (well that's taking it a little too far) :).

Ok, It is official. I hate Dorian on "The Other Half"...why does Hollywood feel it has to "ballance" out the ethnicity of everything. I think the show would have been better to keep it ONLY with Dick Clark, Mario Lopez, and Danny Boniducci. Get rid of that black guy already! Most actors and actresses make me sick. Who are they????
And those same people who are knocking the war are such making money on it. How much do you think Tom Hanks made for "Saving Private Ryan" and all those other war films that explode out of Hollywood.

If i have just won an award for whatever talent i possess or some performance, and i choose to spend the 18 seconds i have on stage to exercise my right to FREEDOM OF SPEECH (first little bit of the constitution--fascinating read!!! try sharing it with you CHILD), then you can mute me. Let's see, we could have the banal "OHMIGOD!!!!!! Im sooo honored!" or you could use the moment to open a narrow mind a crack. Good for them! Giving their time to speak out on whatever troubles them. You sure did speak YOUR mind when someone gave you a forum, didn't you?
Sick of censorship--this is a great country BECAUSE of our civil liberties...why are people so quick to see them eroded if they are worth killing and dying for? THINK about it. You're parents, right?

I just got done watching the show "The Other Half" and was just wondering if any of you people watched it and what you thought of the black guy on the show? I watched the show a couple years ago when I was home with my baby but then went back to work. I am now home again and cannot believe they got rid of the black hot looking plastic surgeon and replaced him with this ugly arrogant ignorant guy! Go away Dorian! Geez!

NANCI, well said!!! let's get a new question going, iparenting!!!
LH, is this the new cool, calm and collected you?? LOL!!!!! as i said in a previous post, i understand the frustration that many of us feel and express on this board because the world is just crazy right now!!!
my way of thinking has always been that wheras i cannot always contain myself from losing my temper, to be able to sit back and recognize where i perhaps went too far or where i offended people is a wonderful ability.
so i'm sure some people will appreciate your humble apology....but don't lose that fiery passion!!! it's not always a bad thing!!! and as you like to enjoy laughs, i like laughing with you!!!!!
congrats on your daughter's 2nd place win.....

Whoa! Hello! I went back to the original question regarding the right of celebrities to sound off wherever they feel like it without regard to the venue. OH, if only I could do that at work!!! My answer is "no." Celebrities, too, have a time & place - the oscar ceremony wasn't it. I am so GLAD that michael moore was boo'd - I was looking for respite from the war. Who the heck invited him to spout his drivel?
He is free to do so - let him look for another venue, is all.
Then the conversation denegraded to protesters fouling up rush hour, causing damage (hey, that's destruction of property & is illegal where I live) and other various activities. I, too, would feel like running someone over who was screwing up my day while all i wanted was to get to the sanctuary of my house. How dare they impinge on *my* freedom!"
The bottom line here is that this discussion has gone around fifty times and we need a new topic, hopefully more closely related to parents, grandparents and those lovable, bouncy little humans we would do anything for.
But, since we're giving some opinions, here are some of mine and my freedom to express them without any of you drawing & quartering me:
I am in favor of the war to oust Saddam Hussein. I wish we could have KILLED him and his sons (who are even more crazy than their father) and gone home. I have nothing against these oppressed people but sadness.
I can hardly watch the news without choking up - I went to military.com and read about those who have already died in battle. I don't like the war .. but there are times in life where we may not have the choice.
My heritage is from outside the USA (5 generations or so ago) like many of you but first, and foremost, I AM AN AMERICAN & PROUD OF IT. I love my country and the freedoms it affords. Those of us living here are very, very, very, very lucky. (Catch my drift?)
We are at war..period. Let's support the next genberation of military who are protecting our freedoms and trying to instill freedom & choice in an oppressed country (Iraq, for those not paying attention). I pray for a speedy resolution but, inlike the last Gulf War, we have to stick around and make sure the *natives* aren't persecuted in the aftermath. No leaving them high and dry - we ALL (definition: nations of the world) need to see this to the end.
Bring our troops home with a minimum of casualties ASAP!
OK, SO WHAT IS THE NEW QUESTION??????

OK, my hubby and daughter are in bed and my "productive" stuff is done and this is MY time now!
ANGELA..I hope we got the MY MY thing figured out! I am sorry if you think I come off as obnoxious..I don't come on this board to start fights..I enjoy debating, asking questions of others, getting answers, and as I've said before sharing a few laughs!
I must say that you do confuse me thought as I scrolled back and saw you had several posts yourself and one in particular dated March 28--"Lyne and LH--you go girls! At the risk of sounding like an ugly american-as far as Riley is concerned, do we really care what one coat-riding Canadian thinks?...I am confused as to why you said "you go girls!", then came back later saying I am obnoxious and unproductive! If you would, please explain!
As for the people from Canada who are posting on this board..I offer a sincere apology for posting "FTC"..it was rude and thoughtless of me to say such a thing based on the postings, quotes, polls,or opinions of others! I am usually a clear-headed and somewhat focused person and not sure how I fell into such a "trap", but will watch for it from now on! Well, thanx for reading!! :-)

ANGELA...
thanks for your posts. i have to say i'm a tad bit offended at your asking if me and some of the other posters do anything productive all day or just argue on our computers...
first of all, i have tried (not always succeded) to politely argue my points and opinions, which i thought was the point of this board. i haven't tried to be insulting or arrogant or mean. forgive me if i have come across like that at any point...
secondly, i am a stay at home mom and consider my daily activities more productive than many!!! i am proud of what i do each day!!
perhaps you didn't mean this as an attack at all, and i'm being overly sensitive, so i will just stress my first point...i have not intented to be mean-spirited or obnoxious on this board, and i apologize to anyone who has felt that....
thank you!

I was not claiming this board as mine, my first time here actually. As for the board I'm always on.. yes I do run that one.. so I think of it as mine... again I apologise. And Thankyou.. I agree about the school yard thing.. I came here from preconception.com to answer the weekly question.. till I saw my country (can I say that since I was born and raised here?) under fire and couldn't understand what most of us (Canadians) had to do with the PM's statement. Just thought I would clarify that before I got my head taken off .. again.. LOL..

Angela- well stated, I agree with your statement regarding the rest of the worlds countries eventually asking us for handouts...not loans, but handouts!
I think it is enough to say that America is #1 in the world because it is a fact. People around the world can criticize us, but that is only because they are JEALOUS of us and our wealth. We are not a socialist country in which all your salary mostly goes to the government and the public health care system, but rather a capitalist country where if you work hard you get more, PERIOD.
As far as this Canadian thing goes, I think it looks like two warring high schools from the same town. It is good to have school spirit people or rather be patriotic towards your country, but shut up already, especially the Canadian loser who posts these obscenely long, for all we know inaccurate, posts!
Just be happy you are alive and living in a free democracy and shut up already!

No LH I did not misunderstand your words--look at your post around noon time. Up until a few months ago, I too was a stay at home mother of two, and in June will once again be a stay at home mother when our third arrives, and I also enjoy my computer when I am home. Not to the point of being obnoxious though... Anyway--Lynn(sp?), you are right in that the UN has not worked--how much more time after 12 years did Saddam need to disarm? Really!! France, Canada, Russia, and Germany will,(I can almost guarantee this)need help sometime in the future--and it is no mystery who they will turn to. And you know what? We will probably render aid to them. Why? Because we ARE bigger and better--not just in size or military power either, but in integrity and knowledge in how to do the next right (not popular) thing. And you are right in that they should be ashamed. NOW-I do believe my lunch hour is more than over! We are having our first 80-degree day outside, and I am absolutely HATING being inside at work! :(

Hi again everyone--hope you all had a good weekend! I'm on my lunch hour and wanted to see the posts since I wrote on Saturday--they are certainly interesting. If I may give a quick opinion though--can we maybe lay off Canada now? The posts are starting to sound like a school yard argument. Yes, I think we all know that Canada officially does not support our actions in Iraq, but they certainly support receiving anything they can get from our country (money, military protection, etc.) Whether we like their country's stand or not, they are not who we are at war with, so lets not lose our focus on what is important...OUR troops, OUR spouses and other family members there doing what is right, and most importantly their safe return home after successfully completing their mission. Finally, just a personal thought of my own--actually I am just curious--LH, J-MO, and PJB: Do you ladies do anything during the day that is productive or of benifit to anything or anybody, that does not involve sitting at the computer arguing on message boards. Also, LH you sent a post today at noon time referring to "my" board--are you for real? You consider these message boards "yours"? You all sound quite supportive of our troops in the Gulf (my husband is one of them-thank you:) ) so could you not find a better way to support them that does not involve trying to "out shout" Canadians on this board? How about volunteering with the USO or the Red Cross? How about mentoring a child who is left without a parent at home due to deployment?

Canadian again, I could Kiss you. Well said. I don't think the US deserved it. I think that the Canadians on this board just don't want to stoop to the level of someone only looking for a fight.
I do live close to the border, but only because the weather is warmer here. I have already lived where the snow flies in July.
And just to let Americans know how our country does things......
Our federal elections are always off. The largest population is in the east (Ontario mostly). The majority of the west at least 4 provinces worth never vote for the Libreal Party, but because we don't have the population we alway come up short. I too didn't vote for the PM. I voted for the opposition. And as I recall Canada too is an independent country and has the right to act in its own best interests.
Canada never actually said that they won't EVER back the war, they just wanted to go through the UN. ( as did many other countries)
It's a real shame to have to bully support from people. Most seem to feel pressure from America to back them up, don't you want real support not pressured support?

Oh I have read all of the past posts.. from the first to the last!
Being able to copy and paste a bunch of political crap does not make one a rocket scientist. That was my point. Anyone can create a poll. Even me.. I can poll my board and ask them how many there are for the war. Answer.. almost garenteed... Most of them.. Is that an answer? NO. That is a small portion of the population (not canadian either) and not accurate enough to go shooting my mouth off about. Have never said you didn't like Canadians? Want some of your own quotes from here? sure..
I personally have not read any polls except those posted on this board and I would have to have been hiding under a rock somewhere to not know that Canada is not with in this war! I don't need polls to tell me that!! I will ask you the simple question that EVERY and I mean EVERY Canadian I have asked has dodged...Can you honestly give a yes or no answer to "Do you think the USA got what it deserved on 9-11?"??
LH
(bytheway.. I am Canadian.. 100% and my answer is NO!)
As our dear president said "If you are not WITH us, then you are AGAINST us!" and from what I have heard lately Canada is not with us, so.....FTC!!!!
LH
(Oh no.. that is not hatred!)
The US listened to the pandering of the UN for 12 years! how much longer were we supposed to wait? the US is an independent country and has the right and obligation to act in its own best interests.
PJB
(Yes you are your own independent country. So why is it that you depend on us to pat you on the back with this? US don't really care what we think! You don't care that polls are not accurate! So why bother defending my postion? I don't live within 800 miles of the American border! I live where the snow flys in July! I don't need a handout.. I have softwood lumber! And I have a heart and don't put everyone down for the words of one man only!! Besides that fact.. I didn't vote for our PM.. so I have to take blame for him? I don't think so.)
You can quote all of the polls and jibberish you wish too from sites and news and such.. but like I said before.. my views are not their views and if you don't want my support.. quit asking for it!

TO BE OR NOT TO BE--AWARE: If Americans were Canadians, they'd at least be better informed
By Ed Finn
Canadians are not citizens of the United States, and don't want to be. We are less insular and jingoistic, less prone to violence, less willing to blindly follow our political leaders--and we're also generally much better informed, particularly on global issues.
This statement will be dismissed by some as an example of Canadian pomposity, so it should be conceded at the outset that such generalities can't be applied to individual Canadians or Americans. There are clearly exceptions on both sides of the border. But any objective examination of our two cultures will surely reveal that most Canadians share a world-view that is more open-minded, tolerant, and knowledgeable than that of most Americans. That's a generality that's easy to validate, at least statistically.
Here are some stats to keep in mind, culled from recent studies and polls:
79% of Americans believe the United States is viewed favourably by the rest of the world--or at any rate should be;
only 2% of Americans know the name of Canada's prime minister;
69% of Americans support President Bush's foreign policy, including an attack on Iraq;
66% of U.S. high school students say that Vietnam is an island, and 25% can't name the ocean that separates the U.S. from Asia;
40% of Americans haven't read a book since they left school, and the same percentage say they don't follow international news because they don't think what happens outside the U.S. can possibly affect them;
during the entire decade of the 1990s, the major U.S. TV and radio networks devoted a total of less than one hour of coverage to events in 173 other countries, and a total of about one hour a year to Canadian news.
The ignorance and introversion reflected by these statistics are at least partly the fault of the U.S. media, which, as the statistics above also show, fail to tell Americans what is really happening elsewhere in the world. If Americans were aware of how often their government has invaded, bombed, blockaded, and plundered other countries; how many democratic governments the CIA has subverted and overthrown; how many millions of innocent civilians have been killed by U.S. bombs, bullets, landmines, and economic sanctions over the past 50 years--a lot fewer than 79% of them would believe their country should be universally loved. They would know it wasn't, and understand why.
But their mainstream media keep Americans in the dark about their government's barbaric behaviour overseas. And far too few Americans make an effort to dig deeper for the truth. They wouldn't have to dig far to find dissenting and enlightening views in such magazines as The Nation, Z, The Progressive, and Harper's.
Nor would they have much trouble getting acquainted with the dozens of outspoken American journalists and academics who know all about their country's far-from-admirable foreign interventions and aren't afraid to write and talk about them. These courageous American critics include author and movie-maker Michael Moore, whose book exposing political corruption in the U.S., Stupid White Men, has been a best-seller since last March; noted academic Noam Chomsky, whose book 9/11 on the reasons for the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington has also been on the best-seller lists for more than a year; and Lewis Lapham, the eloquent editor of Harper's who, in deploring his fellow Americans' lack of understanding of the 9/11 attacks and the bellicose response of the Bush administration, made this trenchant observation: "It is a terrifying failure in a country that possesses the power to poison the Earth [that it] possesses neither the desire nor the courage to know itself."
This is not to imply that we Canadians are fully informed about global issues, but it's safe to say, I think, that most of us know more about world affairs than most Americans do. (Probably 98% of us can at least name the U.S. president!) We aren't blinded by a super-patriotic "my country is always right" attitude; our commercial media, though heavily skewed to the right, seem to be somewhat more open to dissenting views; and we have a healthy array of alternative media (like The Monitor) that growing numbers of Canadians have come to read regularly.
Perhaps this accounts in part for the results of a couple of polls taken earlier this fall in Canada. One of them found that an overwhelming majority of Canadians think that U.S. policies and actions around the world were at least partly to blame for the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. Of those polled, 69% said the U.S. bore some responsibility, and 15% said it was solely responsible. Only 14% felt the U.S. was entirely blameless.
The second poll tested Canadian support for a U.S. attack on Iraq, revealing that such a military assault found favour with only 38% of the respondents. I thought that was still a rather high level of support, taking the other poll on 9/11 into account, but, after looking at the question, I think it could have been interpreted as describing an attack on Iraq by the U.S. and its allies, and perhaps sanctioned by the United Nations. Had the question clearly asked for an opinion on a unilateral U.S. attack (or one supported only by Britain and possibly a few other smaller nations), I think Canadian public support would have registered well below 38%.
Since this piece has to be written in September to meet our printing deadline, a full-fledged U.S. military exercise in Iraq may already be raging by the time you read these words in November. If so, I would doubt that any poll taken after such an attack started would show 38% Canadian backing, and certainly not anywhere near the support registered in such a poll in the U.S.
This would not be because most Canadians are morally or ethically superior to most Americans, or even less bloodthirsty. Human beings are basically the same everywhere. The main difference is that we're better-informed and thus more difficult to deceive. We recognize the simplistic, self-serving, sabre-rattling, "bomb-the-bastards" approach of the world's most heavily-armed nation for what it is: the bully's substitute for a thoughtful, moderate, rational way of dealing with one's neighbours.
The political, business and military leaders of the U.S., unfortunately, have a lifetime love-affair with guns and bombs and missiles and tanks and fighter planes and warships and nuclear submarines. They spend billions more on these "weapons of mass destruction" than they do on contributions to human welfare, either at home or abroad.
Perhaps a more well-informed U.S. citizenry would be able to curb its political leaders' propensity to "shoot first and ask questions later." They might even be able to convert their country from an international mad bomber into an international benefactor.

Hi PJB,
Please read PAST POST'S.....
I have already posted those stats.....
Majority thinks U.S. partly to blame for Sept. 11
By SHAWN MCCARTHY
Ottawa Bureau Chief; Source: Ipsos-Reid
Saturday, September 7, 2002
A vast majority of Canadians believes the United States bears at least some responsibility for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks because of U.S. policies in the Middle East and around the globe, according to a Globe and Mail/CTV poll.
In the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, critics were pilloried for suggesting the United States bore some responsibility for the attacks, and Mr. Wright said U.S. pollsters will not ask the question.
But he said the poll suggests Canadians recognize that the projection of military might around the world comes with a price tag, even as many Americans struggle to understand why they were attacked.
"I think this is Canadians saying, 'You are bound to get stung when you stick your hand in the hornets' nest looking for honey,' " Mr. Wright said.** "But I don't think this is evidence of people saying they deserved what they got at all."**
He said there has been considerable evidence that U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement agencies did not act on a series of warnings.

Where did that poll come from Canadian? It didnt come from an American Poll, I can tell you that. More than 70% of Americans are FOR and FULLY SUPPORT the war. We never said we disliked Canadians, I go there every year for a trip, some of the nicest people I have met. And like someone else said, a poll doesnt tell you WHO they asked or what was asked, so we all take that into consideration.

Hi Bobbi,
Actually we have already addressed a similar poll that you have cited.
But I have heard of the poll that LH is talking about. Again, as i have said SEVERAL times, i know that not all polls can be considered reliable since we dont know WHO was polled.
I will copy my original post below:

OK, this isnt THE poll, I'm still looking for it, but this is an interesring statement:
"Perhaps this accounts in part for the results of a couple of polls taken earlier this fall in Canada. Take a read if you wish, it is a mean spirited article.
I would be interested to know from any canadians here on this board what you think about the article. Accurate? is this a reliable source?

Hi Canadian,
Actually we covered very well how the feelings discussed about canada do not encompass every canadian. we have made that VERY clear. Please read all the posts to get a better feel for the discussion.
The poll you cited about the US disapproval is dead wrong. Unless it is some total liberal rag that polls only its own constituents. the national polls have a "in support of war" rating of near 70% now.
But again, if you would read all the conversations, we have covered that too, that polls are not reliable sources, it was just a good discussion point.

And to answer the actual question here.. NO I don't think it is appropriate for actors and musicians to voice their opinions at award shows.. their support for the troops yes.. but they should keep their opinion to themselves for an award show is neither the time or place to voice opinions.
On the poll side.. I found one you may love..
79% of AMERICANS (yes the good ol USA) does not support their president or the war! Still think polls are all that? Are you one of the 79%? It must be true! It was aired on the news and in american print!
Just a thought.

Oh and one more thing.. just in case you were not aware.. we have many troops still in Afganistan and two ships over there near Iraq. (Canadians that is) Not to mention the numerous Canadian soldiers that are in the british or american army that are there fighting... My close friends from high school are all over there and they are Militia. Just a thought to ponder on how *uninvolved* Canada is.

Well now! Seems that this sight is the official *bash the Canadians sight*. Oh yes.. they say (the news?? and of course they always tell the truth) that we don't like americans?? I don't ever remember being polled! How can those stats be accurate when they talk to 100 people who happen to be a bunch of political jackass's and they speak for our entire country's population? I don't think so. I don't believe USA deserved 9/11! No one deserves that! I lost a friend there! Our police/firemen/EMT's and salvation army volenteers swarmed over there to help in any way we could! Would you do that for someone you didn't like? Remember they didn't get paid for that! As a matter of fact.. many of the ones who went returned to find out they were fired for going... because they missed work. I don't think its fair that the politicians get to shoot off their mouths and claim it blankets all of Canada's feelings. Not even close! I think we should be involved in the war effort! Only thing I disagree with.. is the way Bush went about it. He should have had UN backing first. But sometimes you have to throw the first stone to knock the chip off of the block. (Start something to prove a point)
In all.. if you want to bash Canadians then so-be-it.. but remember.. we are not the terrorists here! We treat everyone with the respect they deserve, and unless you go all across the country and randomly do your own poll.. don't beleive everything you see or read about! We are told one the news that the states hates us.. I have alot of friends there.. I just take it where it comes from.

JMO, my dear I still say you are the most level-headed of all and you seem really sweet! There have been a few Canadians on this board who are apauled at someone/anyone saying we got what we deserved on 9-11..so I apologize for saying EVERY when I should have said MOST!BUT..I still say that if someone answers YES to that question then they are EVIL and I refuse to change my mind on that! This war is going to get very ugly soon and I already have several friends with children over there and being sent over as backup--one of them has a newborn and another is going through cancer treatments while her son and father of two young just got deployed! They need my friendship and prayer right now, so that is where I will be directing my energy! And HEY, we will be getting a new question soon..so that should be fun!!! **I wonder what ever happened to RENNIA? She has not been on all week..I sure hope she is doing okay and staying strong and that her hubby will be OK..as do I hope for all the others on this board with loved ones over there!!! Oh and JMO, I went to breast cancer site and signed!!! This is totally off of the subject, but my daughter showed me a site tonite that showed clearly why people shouldn't drink and drive..it is not for the faint of heart, but sends a good, strong message and is worth checking out!
http://www.hot.ee/dontdrink/
I think that is correct, but may have to add a ' to the "don't"---well got to hit the sheets--nitee! :-)

hey, since you all are obviously internet addicts like myself (lol) i thought perhaps i could persuade some of you to make a difference in an area not related to the war???
go to www.thebreastcancersite.com
every click made there helps fund free mammograms for women...
my mother is a SURVIVOR and more women could be with the help of a single click each day!
thanks to those who do this!!!

you said to bobbi that "every and you mean every canadian you asked dodged the question"...
i am half canadian and i will willingly answer! NO!!!(but just HALF canadian!!! lol...and my mom is FULL canadian and she is gung-ho about this war!! usa all the way!!!)
actually maybe you didn't misquote, cause you never actually came right out and asked me...

well said SHAWANDA, and LH and all you others who disupted BOBBI and "PEACE"...
i would never be so arrogant as to claim that i am the most informed person on world affairs, foreign policies and the like, although i am highly educated and i don't consider myself a moron...
but i cannot understand the rationale where ANY one could suggest that the usa deserved 9/11 or was "partly to blame" for it.
now of course the usa is not perfect and perhaps some decisions made over the years by various administrations have been flawed, but to deserve or to hold blame for a surprise terrorist attack killing thousands of innocent people??? how is that possible????
i wish i could say something profound, but i am just baffled....
and to use john lennon's words in an argument?? i mean come on, now. the question of the week relates to celebrites using award shoes for political campaigns. sure lennon had a right to voice his feelings in his own song, but he talks about greed?? while his widow and former bandmates have been in serious fighting for years over what? MONEY. (see lennon's opinion on greed)
i think perhaps we should all face a harsh reality. peace will never be accomplished in this world. while i totally agree with the u.s. fighting to liberate the people of iraq, rid the world of an evil man, and restore some sense of diplomacy to iraq, world peace ain't never gonna happen.
the best we can hope for is that less innocents die, whether as a result of war or murder or domestic violence and that more evils are killed or locked away forever and ever.
and as LH said, we can imagine, and for those of us who are christians, KNOW that there is a heaven. and that, my dear "board" friends, is where we will finally find peace.

Cameragirl..love that quote, especially #7!!! BOBBi..I personally have not read any polls except those posted on this board and I would have to have been hiding under a rock somewhere to not know that Canada is not with in this war! I don't need polls to tell me that!! I will ask you the simple question that EVERY and I mean EVERY Canadian I have asked has dodged...Can you honestly give a yes or no answer to "Do you think the USA got what it deserved on 9-11?"??

Dennis Miller on the War:
All the rhetoric on whether or not we should go to war against Iraq has
got my insane little brain spinning like a roulette wheel. I enjoy
reading opinions from both sides but I have detected a hint of confusion
from some of you.
As I was reading the paper recently, I was reminded of the best advice
someone ever gave me. He told me about the KISS method ("keep it simple,
stupid!) So, with this as a theme, I'd like to apply this theory for
those who don't quite get it. My hope is that we can simplify things a
bit and recognize a few important facts.
Here are 10 things to consider when voicing an opinion on this important
issue:
1) Out of President Bush and Saddam Hussein ... Hussein is the bad guy.
2) If you have faith in the United Nations to do the right thing keep
this in mind, they have Libya heading the committee on human rights and
Iraq heading the global disarmament committee. Do your own math here.
3) If you use Google search and type in "French military victories,"
your reply will be "did you mean French military defeats?"
4) If your only anti-war slogan is "no war for oil," sue your school
district for allowing you to slip through the cracks and robbing you of
the education you deserve.
5) Saddam and bin Laden will not seek United Nations approval before
they try to kill us.
6) Despite common belief, Martin Sheen is not the President. He only
plays one on TV.
7) Even if you are anti-war, you are still an "infidel!" and bin Laden
wants you dead, too.
8) If you believe in a "vast right-wing conspiracy" but not in the
Danger that Hussein poses, quit hanging out with the Dell Computer dude.
9) We are going to liberate them.
10) Whether you are for military action or against it, our young men and
women overseas are fighting for us to defend our right to speak out. We
all need to support them without reservation.
I hope this helps.

PEACE..I do enjoy listening to the songs of the 60's..but they bear no reference to this day and age! John Lennon words may be beautifully written but personally I would like to IMAGINE that there is a HEAVEN!As for the other poem you quoted by McCurdy--I think the USA tried to promote that once and we almost succeeded until we found out everyone else was screwing up behind our backs!UNITED FOR PEACE..please scroll back and read my post and who is funding the antiwar movements..I think if you did some research on this you would be amazed at how the unsuspecting people protesting this war are being used as PAWNS!! SHAWANDA..thanks for the info..I will check that out later as it sounds interesting!! Now for you BOBBI..How does asking such a question (Do you feel that the USA got what it deserved on 9-11)make you politically incorrect?? I could care less what country you live in, but if you say that we got what we deserved, then you are EVIL! I think we stood very strong in those turbulent times and to think that someone, somewhere was laughing at us and saying we got what we deserved..well that makes me feel like puking!!!As our dear president said "If you are not WITH us, then you are AGAINST us!" and from what I have heard lately Canada is not with us, so.....FTC!!!!

United for Peace,
I hate to inform you that even though Dr. King was for peace in throughout the world, he failed to secure that same peace in his home and amongst all blacks. He spoke against organizations that did not uphold "his" ideals. Read, "The Meeting of Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X".
He wasn't assasinated for his stance on peace, contrary to popular belief, he was assasinated because he began to realize that he must reform his approach to peace (they don't teach that in history books).
After responding to "xxxxxxxxx" post, I went to see what the Nation of Islam had to say about the war, but found something more interesting than the information that I was searching for. At www.noi.org, they have actual FBI files downloaded which shows that Martin's approach had begun to change. Call it a conspiracy theory or whatever, but the FBI which was under the leadership of Hoover was investigating his "new found" approach. I would have to type a book about my entire findings, so I'll stop here.
Check it out. Even though, he often quoted Ghandi, he understood Ecclesiates Chapter one's: "for everytime there is a season"; " a time for peace and a time for war".

So sad about Canada. We were just there last month prior to the start of the war-Vancouver and Victoria and the Canadians were nothing but nice to us. Last night I had the strangest dream I’d ever had before
I dreamed the world had all agreed to put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room, filled with women and men
And the paper they were signing said we’d never fight again.
And when the paper was all signed and a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads and grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below were dancing round and round
While swords and guns and uniforms were scattered on the ground.

APRIL 4-7: HONOR THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., STOP THE WAR NOW!
United for Peace & Justice Call for Nationally Coordinated Local Actions, April 4-7
Washington's war hawks are loose. They are piteously bombarding Iraq in an unprovoked, illegal and immoral attack. They are ignoring the plight of people at home and spending billions of dollars on killing people who have never threatened our country.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was our country's foremost spokesperson for peace and justice. He understood how immoral
war abroad meant racism and injustice at home. For this he was vilified and eventually assassinated on April 4, 1968. (A
year earlier, on April 4, 1967, Dr. King had delivered a major speech against the war in Vietnam.)

JMO..BERMUDA!!OMGosh I would love to visit! I always see the comercials on TV for it and hope to someday visit!!
You were lucky to have your daughter home with you on 9-11! I was very nervous, but didn't start really freaking out till they hit the Pentagon and that is when I called the hubby at work, begged him to come home and stop and pick daughter up from school on the way!I just needed my family at home, because I honestly felt we were all in mortal danger! It was not until later I found out that one of the planes was so close to my little town that it very well could have flown right over top of my house!!Talk about scary!! It was either that night or the next that it thunderstormed in the middle of the night--with one of the loud bangs of thunder I remember jumping out of the bed and running to the window--in times of great stress our minds will play tricks on us, and I thought we were under attack again! I sure hope we never have to go through that horror again! Also, just wanted to add that during Desert Storm my daughter was about 3 yrs. old and I remember being glued to the TV as I have been recently--I used to have to set her down beside me with some toys so I could watch some war coverage (we had family over there fighting that time)--- during this war my daughter who is now 16 now watches the evening news with us and has it on in the morning before school so she can stay aware of what is going on! My how times change--they do grow up so fast!

LH, wow...that poem was really beautiful. it brought me back to how i felt on 9/11. i, too, remember the chaos and confusion. but i also remember feeling hope...i'll tell you why..
i was home with my then 3 month old daughter when the phone started to ring on 9/11. the day was a nightmare, i must have cried a thousand tears all day long. as i was in such turmoil and devastation, my baby girl started talking her baby talk to me and cooing and giggling. i looked down and was almost annoyed that she was being so damn cute and funny while i was broken hearted, but then i realized...there is still hope in this ugly world. the innocence and purity of my daughter's smile got me through that day and many more...sometimes i'm saddened by the thought of what her future may hold, but i'm comforted in the joy that she brings me....

The Global Competitiveness Report 2000 ranks Canada first in the world at developing knowledge workers. Canada has the highest rate of post-secondary enrollment in the world. On a per-capita basis there are more good workers in the high-skill job market in Canada than there are in the the United states. Canadian labour turnover rates are also half those in the US, resulting in labour cost savings of 7% - 10%.
A 1999 study by KPMG found that the cost of Canadian technical and professional workers is about 65% the cost of US workers. Canada's overall labour costs were the lowest of all the countries surveyed. Canada has the lowest cost of living in the G-7.
Canada is the fastest place to pull together worldwide research or production teams. Canada is a multicultural society that welcomes people from other lands. Quality workers with a variety of language skills settle in Canada permanently, and temporary foreign workers are also useful to Canadian-based firms.
Canada ranks No. 1 in the world in "Technological Potential" - a concept put forward by the World Economic Forum. For more than a decade, Canadian productivity gains have outstripped American gains.

Just a little tid bit of info from a canadian economy website:
"By 1999, trade in goods and services between Canada and the United States totalled $622.7 billion—an average of $1.7 billion of business crossing our border every single day. The dominance of the United States in our trade statistics is striking: all told, in 1998 the United States bought over four-fifths of our exports and produced three-quarters of our imports."
Looks like a reason for food being on the table to me.

Hi Jennifer,
What I meant by the phrase is that canada is nearly totally dependent on the US for its defense/security and economy as well. The trade alliance between canada and the US is the largest in the world. Also with canada having an almost nonexistant millitary, the country is still secure in the fact that they know that its neighbor to the south will protect them. knowing this, i am perplexed as to why canada is so unsupportive of us? Why do they "boo" our national anthem, why do they call our president a moron? so basically, yes, it is the hand that feeds them. without us, who knows what state canada would find itself in. its comforting to know that the citizens of alberta are aware of this fact, and i just read that the PM just got all over the premier of alberta for declaring his support for their neighbor.

Lorraine,
No one has taken the opinion of ONE to draw a conclusion about canada. It is the opinion of the majority of canadians, including the PM that leads me to the view that I at lease have.
You are right about the role the UN is supposed to play, but they have FAILED. The UN did not enforce the resolutions it created in regards to sadaam. How much trust and faith are we supposed to have in an organization that wont follow its own rules? that puts iraq at the head of the disamrmament committee? The US listened to the pandering of the UN for 12 years! how much longer were we supposed to wait? the US is an independent country and has the right and obligation to act in its own best interests.

Hi all..surfing the net and stopped by to read some posts! Here is one of many things I wrote in the weeks following 9-11. It's a sorta' Haiku style poem...
"A New Day"
Jolted awake by
the ringing phone
It's mom, excited
something
Bad has happened
It's on every channel
Tall building is on fire
New York somewhere
People
covered in soot
Terrified faces
in the crowd
Looking up
pointing, Oh my God
Another one hit
not an accident
This is real
I am awake now
And....
It is a new day.
I hope it doesn't get critiqued too much as I know it is not in correct order..most of them weren't as I was trying to convey the confusion and terror of the day.

Thank you for all who support our troops. As the wife of a serviceman, I can tell you that they really really appreciate smiles and even handshakes from complete strangers. I was at the airport this week picking up my step-daughter and a group of Marines were coming into town for pre-war training (San Diego) and I went up to one stranger and told him how thankful I was he was serving our country. The look of shock followed by a huge grin made my week! He told me thank you for the thank you and that he was just "doing his job". If any of you see someone in military clothing, tell them thanks. It means so much to them!

Freedom of speech is important, but there is an appropriate time and inappropriate time to use that precious freedom. Just because you are a "celebrity," doesn't mean you have the right to voice your opinion anywhere and everywhere. How many of us regualr Americans are able get an audience with the congress? Do their opinions matter more than ours? I don't think it does. I tend to disagree with most(not all) celebrities because they tend to see things one-sided, the ultra liberal side usually. I think it is fine to disagree with the war, but it is not o.k. to not stand up for our troops out there fighting for you and me. It is not a war for oil. I can't believe people would even fall for that, however maybe those same people feel Saddam is an up-right, people-loving and honest man. I suggest you do your homework and find out what this man has done to his own people and how afraid they are of him. Maybe they need to find out what he has planned for Americans (on our own soil). I watch the un-biased news reports of FOX as one of my sources.
As for me and my family, we fully support our President and his courage to stand up to a man who has been given 12 years of "diplomacy."
God Bless Freedom everywhere, not just in the USA.

so as i said, LH, you are not alone. if this board helps you, i think that's great. but i'm sure there are support groups in your area that might be able to offer you some comfort should you feel that's necessary.....

Wow, I have skimmed the last weeks worth of postings and have noticed that the topic has again changed. But I will address the original topic given by the website.
I do not think that celebrities should use an award ceremony as a "antiwar" time slot. They are there to collect an award and go home. And I must ask all you, am I the only one out there who thinks the award ceremonies are a bit ridiculous? It seems that every month there is an "award" ceremony for something, and then just when you think you are done for the year, another one comes! I am sick and tired of people (the media) making such a big deal out of these people. All they have done is act in a movie or sing a song...and get paid millions of dollars to do so. Why isn't there a "mom/dad of the year" award ceremony broadcasted world-wide...or specific career ceremonies (ie. Military man/woman of the year...or nurse/police/firefighter of the year!). How about honoring the people out there who REALLY make a difference?I have honestly quit watching the award ceremonies just because I could care less who wins what and what they are wearing. They exude nothing but materialism and then try to sprout off their liberal ideals and agenda that they want the rest of the world to adhere to but not themselves.
