Are you on a low-carb diet? Are you concerned about its safety?

For archived topics, click here.

Obesity is a major factor in heart attacks. I actually haven't heard any reliable evidence that low-carb puts you at risk of heart attacks. I have heard about kidney damage. Nothing out there works like low-carb for losing weight. It is amazing! The low-carb idea came from the diet created for diabetes patients. Our bodies are not made to consume and process the sugar we eat. I don't see how cutting sugar down has gotten such a bad rap. I look great, feel great, and have much more energy... all with three children! I would recommend it to anyone who has struggled for years to lose. My doctor also recommends the diet. As a matter of fact, he's lost a ton of weight on it!!

I've heard that low-carb diets can cause heart attacks. Why would anyone risk that? Is it too hard for people to just eat a well-balanced diet, and everything in MODERATION. I want to start the MODERATION DIET.

LH~sorry to hear about your dad. That must have been scarey for your mom. The hydrochloride stuff in Benedryl makes it volatile to a lot of different meds. Hope he feels better soon.

I have another movie recommendation. LOL...Our video store was offering $.99 movies (new releases too!) this weekend, so we have been enjoying some popcorn and movietime after we tuck in the kids the last couple of nights.

"The Last Samarai" Very GOOD!

Well, my wknd has taken an unexpected turn...I got the call from my mom to meet her in the ER yesterday around 11am...its my dad and he's not doing too well so prayers would be most appreciated! They did release him {damn hospitals anyways!} and he is at home now, but we're keeping an eye on him...his doctor had prescribed him to take "Benedryl" for sleep and it had a reaction with his other meds...he is really depressed and shakey as well and its hard seeing him like this...I have been a wreck!

Hey all! Hope you are having a great kick-off to your Holiday Weekend! Jake got called to help at the concession stand for a Softpitch All-Star tournament tonight, so just me and the kiddos. I have to admit I'm a bit pissed about it though, as the person who VOLUNTEERED our Youth League to work the concession stand over the Holiday Weekend has worked...guess everybody...how many shifts has he worked? ZERO! That's right! He *had Holiday plans with his family*! Well, gee...don't we all? Jake has put in TONS of time into Youth League this year, organized the Youth Tournament, and was Assistant Manager of the Concession's. I TOLD him weeks ago that he WAS NOT working over the 4th...let lardass who volunteered our group work...we have done our share. BUT, Jake's good friend volunteered to work, and he was there trying to do everything by himself, and that is impossible if you have to try to BBQ at the same time. So, I don't blame Jake for wanting to give the guy a hand...I just am pissed that once again Darrin dumped on everybody else. He's lazy...that's why his mama had to use her life insurance money to bail his farm out from foreclosure. I'll see him in church tomorrow morning, and we will *talk* after the service. At least at church you can be assured I will keep my tone low, and swearing to the zilch. If his lazy bootie is on the Youth Board next year, I think we will just pay the $50 participation fee, and skip the headaches. THERE! I am done with my piss, bitch, and moan for now! Feelin' better. LOL!

We took Dayton in for pictures today, and she was SUCH a good girl! As long as we had all three kids there, all looking nice, without their usual bug bites, scratches, etc. on their faces, we took separate pictures of Maranda and Mason too(he got a *Spidey* background, and he is proud!). Then we got two poses of all three kids together....we don't have one of those yet, but these turned out great! I paid for the portraits on disc too, so I could email them, then realized the lady gave me a floppy disc, and not a CD. Our computer only will run CD's, so I'll have to wait until work on Tuesday to download the floppy....then clear those computers ladies...my babies are a comin'! =)

I better go get my angels in bed. I took them to the pool this afternoon, and as you all know, there is nothing like an afternoon of swimming to wear the little ones out! Catch you all later. TC.

Since we are both frontier women...Have you seen "Open Range" with Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, and Annette Benning? It was pretty goody. It was a pretty traditional western/prairie type movie right down to the dialogue, and a sweet story. I liked it.

Wow Saraj, how original. Every craft shop and knick knack store in America has those little signs that says "Well behaved women rarely make history" and "Good girls rarely make history".

Can't you come up with anything on your own, or must you always borrow everyone elses quotes and make them yours. IDIOT!

Morning peoples!

Our fireworks are tonight as well...and they basically {suck} so I never waste my time with them! We took the daughter a few times when she was little and that was it! There is a fella' that lives down the road who's got some $bling$ and he always buys up a bunch of fireworks and has his own display! {not cheap fireworks either! These are high-grade, professional type!} I think he's an old military amunitions specialist..or something like that...anyways, he puts on a pretty good show and it's within walking distance!

SEA, are you being *naughty*? Hehe! EnJoY your fireworks!!!

Hey all!

Our town has a Star Spangled Spectacular Extravaganza thing tomorrow, and fireworks at 10:00 p.m.

Saraj~Since the actual Holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is the *Federal* Holiday so banks, court houses, Post office, etc. are all closed.

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to wish you all a happy Fourth Of July weekend!
Today my sister gave birth to the first boy in over 36 years within our family! Yes, it is true, we are a family of all women. All female cousins, my mother has 5 grand-daughters and the last "boy" was my brother who is 36...so needless to say we are estatic about the new arrival! :) 8lbs 5oz!

After landscaping all evening {after dinner} and getting all hot and sweaty, hubby and I just had a nice dip in the pool by candlelite..very refreshing! :-) It's nights like these when I don't think so much about the fact that our daughter will be off to college in another 2-years and hubbs and I will be *alone* again...I think we will be just fine.

We are going to my sisters for the 4th {it's her turn!} and have lots of fun things planned for the wknd! There's a couple of bands playing in the park tonight {that's where daughter is} and then tomorrow the speed boat races on the river and a car show on Sunday! Hubby loves the boat races and we both enjoy checking out the cool cars...especially the vintage Mustangs!!! He's off work on Monday so we will spend that working on my list of "Honey-Do's"! LOL!!

Jen, sorry to hear about your grandmother and brother and I hope things get better soon! I didn't read Summer Sisters, but was hoping to read the "reviews" here. Maybe I will read the next book choice though as that is something I have promised myself to make more time for! {reading!}

SEA, another thing to improve your listing price is landscaping! It doesn't have to be anything real expensive, maybe a new mailbox, a wreath on the door or a flag to hang, clean up the outside abit, plant a few annuals here and there and maybe a couple potted flowers on the porch! Remember..The outside is what they will see first!

Margarita, the pizza sounds yummy! One of my favs is to take a slice of bread, spread some butter on top, add a slice of fresh tomato {has to be "real" tomato!}and then top it with a slice of american cheese and put under broiler for a few minutes...I got "addicted" to these when I was prego with daughter and it is still a comfort food to me...and POPCORN too...I love to make a big bowl of popcorn {no butter and just abit of salt!} and eat it one piece at a time! {drives the hubby nuts! LOL! But that is the way I like to eat it!} OK..now I'm hungry! Hehe!!

Gonna' go pop in the shower and make me some popcorn! Hope there's something good on TV!
G'nite all!

I just ordered Angry Housewives....

It should be here within a week. It looks to be a great book.

One thing though, I really hope people discuss this book more than we did Summer Sisters. Because I read it and loved it. It was one of the better books I have read in a very long long time.

I hope you all have a great Holiday weekend. We were going to have a get together here, but things have since changed and my grandmohter was put into the hospital. And my brother ran into a bit of bad luck. So we are toning down the celebration. Oh well, such is life.

Still wishing you all a great July 4TH.

Oh, I completely agree with both of you, Angela and Margarita! My husband is just very particular about some things. I sold our house in Madison only two days after we listed it for sale by owner. I looked into a lot, and updates and what sells the home was one of them. Kitchens and baths are pretty important, too. We have a totally remodeled upstairs bath...hubby did it about a year ago (he did an amazing , better-than-pro job) ...and now we have new kitchen cabinets that have to go in. I talked hubby out of the heated tiles...but there are still things that he wants to do that I don't agree with. I told him that he has until August and the house gets listed no matter what is or isn't done. ;) Maybe I should invite some of his friends over, that would get him going!

I've learned that nothing ever gets done. You get one thing done and there's another thing to do. We have a vintage CJ5 Jeep that needs a small part but we have no time! I MISS IT!

Life is just too busy!

Boy this is sure a slow board today - of course on the day I am home ;o).

Hey, since the topic is low carb diets I thought I would share a little simple recipe I like. It's not even a recipe, just an idea. As I have said, I am not motivated to remove carbs from my diet, but do avoid simple carbs. So, when I make homemade pizza, this is what I do in lieu of making my own ww dough for crust. I line my pampered chef deep dish baking stone with either whole wheat tortillas, or pita bread (the pita bread is better). I brush a little pizza sauce where the pita bread or tortilla overlap to make a sort of glue. Then I top the "crust" with sauce and and my choice of toppings. It's tasty. If I want to make a single serving pizza, I take a ww pita bread, put sauce and toppings on it and throw it it in the oven. I also like to take a rice cake and put pizza sauce on it with a little low fat cheese and toppings and heat it in the micro for a snack.

Just a few ideas.... healthier than going totally carbless (IMO).

Later, I am off to run errands since dh is home early.

I absolutely LOVE Cosby! I think he a very intellegent man who does alot of good in this world...not to mention, I love his old shows and have gotten "addicted" to watching them late at night when I can't sleep...along with "Archie Bunker on "All In The Family" {reminds me of MY dad! LOL!}, "Cheers", and "Three's Company"! Those old shows are the best!! :-)

SEA...sorry about all the problems you've had lately...just had a moment to read back and it does sound like a good time to be moving out of that neighborhood! I can honestly say I love all my neighbors, but there is a couple of "old farts" down the road that freak out if anyone steps foot on their yard, very gossipy and really no one much cares for them..I just wave and smile real *nice* when I see them and then chuckle to myself! We plan to move {maybe} afer daughter gets into college and have been looking at property in the lower Keys! Heaven! :-)

Anyone seen the TV ad for the movie "The Village"? WoW, looks like a good one and I have that on "must see" list..along with "I, Robot" which I'm planning to take my father to see if he is up to it!

OK...must quit procrastinating and get the 1st load of laundry out...YUKKKK!!

Friday, July 02, 2004 at 12:58:19 (EDT)

Saraj,
While I was studying for my Realtors license, I learned a bit about which improvements pay off, and which don't. Now, I have no idea what your house looks like and what the overall value is, but unless you have a very valuable house that has many extra features similar to heated tile, you are probably NEVER going to recoup the money invested in heated tiles. Many things, as Angela said, will improve the listing and sales price and make you more money, but as a general, expensive floor coverings are not one of them. A fresh coat of pain inside and out, yes ;o) is one of the most basic and valuable things you can do to improve the value of your house. Also, clearing out all of your stuff, except for your essentials is a really good way to make your house show better - what house doens't look better with all the "clutter" gone? I don't mean leave it furnitureless or anything like that, hope that is clear.

Thanks, Barb, we think so too ;o) she's my fav. photo subject.

Ellyn~I was able to catch some bits and pieces of Bill Cosby's comments. I DID catch where he said if you guide your child, you won't have your child relying on some CD to teach him how to live. Also, he talked about how it is cool to call each other the "N" word, but they can't spell it. He does not mince words very much.

Saraj~All of those little details will pay off because they add to your home's value, and your listing price increases. It can all be a pain in the butt though. At this rate though, you will be listing in September, and if you sell right away, that works out great. Too much longer though, and you are selling/moving in the winter time, and that sucks!
angela
Friday, July 02, 2004 at 12:30:33 (EDT)

LOL Angela! I think I just may make up that reserved sign for the officers in town! It IS a good idea! We actually really like all of the officers in our little town, (well, all but one) He's not very smart....lies, and...oh never mind. There are two realy "cool" coppers and one of which likes to have a brew or two with me on occasion. :-) If I wanted to , I could get really into this, but I'm not like that.

We won't formally list our home for a few more months. We already have interested parties, but we have some more things we'd like to do so the home is trouble-free for the new owners. This is one time I wish hubby wasn't such a perfectionist. WHy in the world would you put tiles in with heaters if you're just selling? Sheese!
Oh well, it'll go quickly.

Cosby...I love him. He reminds me a lot of my Father. His jokes stink, but he's cool.

Stephen King is great. Love all of his books!

angela -

Cosby was at the annual conference for Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund. He pretty much said that if black children weren't being educated, then they were going no where. He was highly critical of black men who beat up women because they have no jobs. He said that the black community, by denying the validity of earlier comments he made, was just trying to hide its dirty laundry (that's his term). I think CNN's website has a fairly detailed piece about it today.

Hi girls!
We have had SOOO much going on and my head is spinning. I need to vent somewhere!
We just built a new house in a lovely little subdivision that is still developing. The builder-- has really strict rules for some things -- such as fences. So, you have to send in a request form when you want a fence. Well-- we did so on the 24th and still have yet to hear back from the builder. Our fence was scheduled to go up July 7th. Well, I called this morning and was told that they never received the request. Then dh said "No, I talked to them after they recieved the request so I know they got it." I call them back and then they magically remember our fence request. hmmmmmm. So, the asst, calls the builder and he tells her that he tried to call us this week because he had a couple questions for us.Thanks to the wonderful world of new tech. I scanned our caller Id and noticed that there are NO out of Area calls or calls from the builder to our house this past week. Hmmmm
I have called to move the fence date back to the 21st! Arggggggggg We have three children and our little one (3yro) wanders and even though I am outside at all times--- he still gets away from me at times and I REALLY need this fence.

Sorry for the gripe-- thanks for listening.
I can now be a bigger part of this board-- we are starting to FINALLY get more settled into our house and I have a little more free time.
Have a great 4th of July! Let's make sure to say extra prayers for all those still out there still fighting for us! :)

J-mo mama, I agree with some of what Bill Cosby has been saying, as well. And I really don’t even like the guy as an actor or comedian.

Margarita, your daughter is gorgeous! I love that close-up at the Mariner’s game. What a cutie! I hope she feels better soon. With the holiday weekend, it’s not a good time to be sick, the poor girl.

Angela, I’ve seen “Pet Semetary” and “It” (that clown scared me to death, too!). Was “The Stand” the one with Molly Ringwald? If so, I think I saw it, but I don’t remember much… was there some sickness that was wiping out most of the population? I’ll keep an eye out for “Needful Things”.

I get to see fireworks this weekend, after all. I get family time AND Mickey time, so it’s the best of both worlds! The town where Mickey lives (she’s the girl I see on Saturdays) has their July 4 celebration the day before, for some reason, so I arranged with her mom that we’ll do that instead of me coming in the early afternoon, like usual. I can’t wait… I love little carnivals, and I really love fireworks. So I get the day with my family, the night with my cutie and the holiday with my family. Plus, hubby and I both have Monday off, so I’m happier than can be!

JMo~I missed it...what has Bill Cosby said now? LOL! I know he made some comments at an awards ceremony, or something, a few weeks ago and I thought he was right on target then! Instead of spending money of Fubu, Sean John, Nike, and *Bling*, some families would be better served to spend that money on education. Of course, some people got all up in arms about it. What has he done now?

good morning girls!

WENDY, i'm easy as far as the books go. but i have heard great things about "the time traveler's wife".

we had a CRAZY lightning storm last night. we don't usually get bad lightning, and when we do it's just sheet lightning. but last nite we actually saw the fork lightning strike something at the other end of the island and a huge fire. i was SO freaked out. the last time i was in thunder and lightning was a year ago living in florida. THAT was insanity. every day crazy storms. i don't know how you ever get used to it. maybe i'm just a big chicken shit, i dunno. i was close to tears it was that crazy.

today is clearing up, tho, and i'm off to town to get some shopping done.

hey did anyone see that bill cosby's been stirring up some controversy again? i agree wholeheartedly with him.

Oh Barb! THAT blows! Another pretty good horror flick in that genre is Pet Semetary...pretty weird, and scary. Also, IT, was pretty good too. Pennywise the Clown scared the crap out of me! Finally, when it comes to Stephen King mini-series, I thought The Stand was terrific.....I think these can all be rented too. Oh...I almost forgot...Needful Things will scare a person too. =)

Well, I think we are in for some big thunder boomer's today....it is humid, humid, humid. One of those days where you get out of the shower, towel off, and never really get dried off. Ugh. On the flip side...my curls are looking magnificent today! =0)

Wendy, my vote is for “Time Traveler’s Wife”.

I finished “Summer Sisters”. I’ve been holding off on mentioning specifics about the book because I’m not sure where everyone is in it, and I don’t want to ruin anything. Wendy, IMO, I think "Angry Housewives Eating Bons Bons" sounds like the perfect book for the group to read! Was there ever a discussion about the first book read? I didn't see any though I might have missed it.

Doing laundry and laying out by the pool today..TGIF!!!

Good morning, everyone. I hope you had a good night.

Angela, you’re not going to believe this, but I lost the second half of “Salem’s Lot”! I’m fuming. I had taped it with our digital cable D-VR (like Tivo). We’ve been having problems with our digital cable, and my hubby talked to the company and found out we need a new box, which he was going to get Saturday. So I had to hurry up and watch “Salem’s Lot” because with the new box, I’d lose it. So I watched the first half two nights ago with plans to watch the rest last night. I turned it on, and there was nothing there! I called the cable company and after twiddling with it for a while, we determined that it’s gone. Oh, the humanity! To watch half of a horror movie is torture. And it’s not going to be on again anytime soon (I checked the schedule). I’m going to have to try to rent it, or something. Any suggestions?

To add insult to injury, I decided to watch a no-brainer movie, “Eurotrip” and it’s just the stupidest movie! Don’t waste your time with it!

Hi guys. Long day - we just got home about half an hour ago. Thank God I don't have classes tomorrw. DD is sick, with what I have no idea but she is running a high fever - 102 to 103, and coughing a little bit. She keeps talking about her throat, but when I ask her if it hurts she says "I don't know mom."

Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons is an excellent book - lol if you guys read that one I can "discuss" it with you- alhtough I didn't see alot of discussion on Summer Sisters.

Barb - I sent you some pics of my dd - and yes Izzy is a doll.

Well ladies, I am going to snuggle with dh for a bit.

...and really...if this person is so OLD, just how fast could he run? It would not seem that there was any imminent danger of him even catching the kids on their bikes, so why would they be so frightened? Not that children ever DRAMATIZE a situation when relaying it or anything. As often as the police have been at your house, you better make sure they have a *reserved* spot in your driveway.

Saraj~Who can figure people out huh? Maybe he just does not like your family...who knows. Apparently the police did not see a huge problem, or they would have arrested him. Or, did they? You are not having a good week...people throwing poop, chasing your kids, etc...no time like the present to list your house I guess.

Oh, and let's say this crank lives at the property...respect is a two way street...I hardly think chasing chldren and scaring them is a very mature way of making the request of not using a driveway. What ever happened to communication? "kncok knock" Hello? HI...I live near the big driwvway that is famous for bike turn arounds...and I am concerned (as if this would be the reason anyway) that your children may get hurt for whatever reason...would you please ask them not to use that driveway?" Sure, no problem...done deal.

Thursday, July 01, 2004 at 22:58:34 (EDT)

No kidding Angela~ Didn't you read where this property is NOT where this person even lives? The lady who lives there is an aquaintance of mine. She's fine with my kids turing around in her driveway~ this is the whole point I am trying to make. This guy is an old crab. (Who chases young children on their bikes.)
SEA
Thursday, July 01, 2004 at 22:54:55 (EDT)

Saraj~Well sure, MOST people would not mind children turning around in their drive way. It's all about respecting somebody else's property though, and having enough respect for other people as to have permission to use their property. My children are not allowed to go wherever they want just because they are *the future* and we should kiss their ass. Part of raising healthy children, is teaching them respect for the other people who share this world with them. Be careful about letting children stand on top of your van...if one of them falls off, and breaks something, one of your *icky* neighbors may end up suing you and taking everything you own, plus everything you ever acquire. I protect my children too, but I won't cover their ass for them if they are doing wrong...part of raising a good adult is teaching them to face the consequences of their own actions.
angela
Thursday, July 01, 2004 at 21:48:29 (EDT)

Angela~ I guess that's where we're different. I see children as our furture for everything. If we're creeps to them, what will that teach them? I'd open my arms to any child who needed a nice big turn around place when they ride their bikes. Kids are precious. I hate crabby old farts who can't see them as anything other than nuisances. We have yummy berries in our back yard (mulnerries!) and later in the year we have an abundance of grapes, and I always invite the neigborhood kids to come and eat them or pick them for their parents. You know how kids love to pick things and eat them right away! :-) Heck, I even drive our van in the backyard for the kids to stand on so they can reach the best berries! Who cares about little footprints and berry stains on the roof. There's not much sweeter than seeing a happy big smily face covered in berry juice. I say f*ck that cranky freakish attitude. I'll protect my kids from that crap any day.

A new book out by James Patterson called

Sams Letters to Jennifer

It is new, but I have just read a boatload of reviews saying it was amazing. Thought maybe we could think of this for our next selection. It is really supposed to be incredible.

Hope you all had a wonderful day. DH is not feeling well tonight and had to go help my BIL move a fridge. So I am off to go to bed early..big weekend ahead.

If I dont make it back on I would like to wish everyone in the States a very very HAPPY JULY 4TH!!!!!!!!!!!

Saraj~Yep...I would think having somebody chasing kids on their bikes is a bit frightening. I do have to say though....they should not be driving their bikes on another person's property. I don't think I should have to put NO TRESPASSING signs on MY property, for people to know it is not a public turn-a-bout for them to ride their bikes on, you know?

I have lost pounds and maintained my weight just following the food pyramid and the recommendations of my nutritionist. I haven't stopped eating what I like to eat, just less amounts of food and more exercise. We can eliminate/decrease the carbs' group because it is necessary for our health.

Mandy~ The tomatoes were green, with holes...we also get other yard trash that mysteriously shows up. :-(

Angela~ I think we both called the police. When he stormed off, I figured he was calling. I wanted to call, too, just so there was a record of it. After 7 years of (well, 5 , since we were all "buddies" in the beginning) hubby and I finally decided that the best thing to do is involve the police, because it has to stop, and nothing else helps. Just a few weeks ago, another neighbor chased my kids ~all the while ordering them to go to him ~ (Why? What did he think he'd do if he CAUGHT them?)because they were turning their bikes around in a driveway that was near his home. My kids ignored him, and came and told me. I called the police, and they warned him not to chase my kids. Things have been good with him ever since. :-) And the officer also told my kids that they can use that driveway until they see a "no trespassing" sign in it. I'm not really sure what the heck it is about some of these people around here. It gets so freaky so often that I find myself questioning if it is something I am doing wrong. Then I go to a cool city like Madison and realize that it's NOT me, it's them. Thankfully, I have some great people here to keep me sane. :-) Yet, moving is so eagerly anticipated!

Holly~The frog made me laugh! Granted, I know you feel awful, but tomorrow your dd might bring home a skunk, which will be the new bestest friend she ever had. Mason brought home a little baby *kitty* one time, that was all black, with a white stripe down its back, and a little bushy tail. YIKES! Fortunately, its *sprayer* was not working yet, and it WAS quite cute. My husband let the kids bring a toad into the house when I was in the hospital after Dayton's birth....we have not found it yet.=)

Saraj~I understand these things are NOT funny to the people involved, but HOW did a poop throwing disagreement, turn into a police issue? Did one of you call, or a neighbor call thinking you two were going to come to blows or where they just driving by and check to see what was going on. I just have this really funny picture in my mind of two people throwing doggy discs at each other! LOL!

Barb~I got the pic of Izzy...too cute I say. Also, I read Salem's Lot in 9th grade and it was soooooo scarey. Also, I watch the miniseries on TNT. It was pretty darn good I must say. Then, they showed a repeat of it (all four hours) and I watched THAT! LOL...I love scarey movies. But then, DH leaves for work at 5am and it's still dark, I go right back to sleep because it creeps me out. Silly huh?

Angela~I'm waiting for those pics - can't wait!!

Joel Steinberg..well all I can say is, there is a special place in hell for human wannabes like him. I feel bad for the teachers involved, back then, they weren't given a lot of leadway to assess and report these situations. I bet they carry alot to this day, poor ladies. Do you know they sent Lisa home several times for recurring head lice? You would think a man who made such good money could afford to have hygeine in his home. I know that happens plenty in clean homes, but not over and over and over. Poor child. The only thing I can come up with that explains his cockiness is that, like most drug addicts, he has blamed the drug, instead of himself. The drugs didn't kill her, he did. I'm sure he'll end up on Larry King or something.

How can someone look at those pics of Hedda and then have the nerve to say "I didn't do anything wrong!" What an awful man. But I guess the only thing that eases my disgust is that one day he will have to face his Maker and I am sure given that he has not admitted to his wrongdoing he has not asked for forgiveness either - so I am sure that he will have to pay for what he has done in the hereafter!

There are strays all over the neighborhood, so he can't prove it was from any of our dogs. Even with that ,had he made the request for me to pick it up, I would have. There is no talking to this family...they are just icky. Well, the police got involved and it turns out we will both be ticketed if one of us filled a complaint form. Sheese. I wrote a little friendly letter and asked them to just be kind and made a request to live in peace. So far, nothing. If ther eis ever any poo from our dogs, it is on or near the property line, and wen I do my bi-weekly dog pick up, I ALWAYS check near the other yards. There is rarely a turd, but when there is ...I pick it up. Now I know where all of the rotten tomatoes are coming from, and we have no garden this year. Man, people can sure be nasty sometimes.

Good morning everybody!

Melissa~Didn't even looking at Joel Steinberg make you want to slap the pompous jerk? The fact that his daughter lived to the age of six is incredible given the horrible conditions she was forced to survive in(I don't think she ever got a chance to LIVE in her short life, she simply tried to survive until she did not have the fight left in her.) And, if you saw pictures of his wife before, and now, you would not even recognize her....not only did he disfigure her physically, but he broke her will emotionally. What really chapped my hide was when he drove away from prison in a Limo. What a prick. One good thing that came out of the death of little Lisa was a redefinition of mandated reporting. Some of Lisa's teachers testified that they KNEW something was wrong, but at that time teachers, clergy, etc. were reluctant to report abuse. Also, there has been a lot of work done in the psychology of abuse and what happens emotionally to a person in that situation(Hedda Nesbaum) and we are better able to understand why they do, or do not, take action to protect themselves and their children. I really hope somebody shoots that jerk.

Good morning yall! I saw the Steinberg think on the Today Show this morning and I was just about ill by the time that piece was over! I cannot believe that we was given manslaughter for the death of that precious little girl! Not to mention from what I read it doesn't look like he was even charged with the beating of his common law wife! I almost wish that would have taken place in Texas, since they practically have an express lane installed in their execution area! I am just sick to my stomach over this one. I have a serious problem with child abuse and criminal domestic violence! I am sure that my opinion on this is swayed because of the fact that I myself was abused as a child and my mother was abused by my bio-father when I was small but I just can't imagine what would ever possess a male person (I refuse to call them men!) to beat a child or his wife! So much for love I guess!

Jen -

Steinberg was paroled after serving 17 years, the mandatory 2/3 of the original 25-year sentence. He also had only a half-dozen minor disciplinary actions during his time in prison. Since his conviction pre-dated the Sentencing Reform Act that was passed in 1995, he was pretty much guaranteed his conditional release. Technically, his sentence was 8-1/3 to 25 years, so he could and did apply for parole when he had served less time. He was denied parole a total of five times. But with few disciplines in prison, there was little they could do to keep him any longer. If he had been convicted after 1995, though, he probably would have served the full 25 years.

Ellyn~That's right, I remember the baby boy now. Steinberg got a Manslaughter charge because he did not mean to kill her...she was left to die on the floor for three days, and he would beat her during that time while he was coked up, but he was not charged with murder. He was a pompous dick during the court proceedings too, and if I remember when Hedda testified she was shaking visibly because she was so scared of him, and he just sat there staring at her.

Not only was Lisa beaten to death and Hedda Nussbaum disfigured from his beatings, but they also had a son that was taken away from them, too. He was just a baby when this happened. When the paramedics came to take Lisa to the hospital, the found him tethered to a playpen, drinking spoiled milk from a bottle. His biological family ended up with him, and he starts college in the fall. And after serving 2/3 of a 25-year sentence for manslaughter, Joel Steinberg still claims he didn't do anything wrong.

For anybody looking for a good movie to rent. We just watched Cold Mountain, and it was fantastic! I read the book many years ago for a book club, and did not like it too much. Did you all see that Joel Steinberg got out of prison today? Remember that case? I remember when his wife, I think her name was Hetta Nesbaum, was on the stand during trial...she was DISFIGURED because she had been beaten so many times, with one bone fracture ON TOP of others that were never treated, by this asshole. And, during trial she looked GOOD compared to what she looked like when they were booked at the police station! She looked like a POW or something then. That case opened the doors to a lot of new domestic abuse laws, and case studies to help us understand the psychology of domestic abuse(this kind of explains why the mother did nothing to help her child, who was dying on the bathroom floor). He drove away from the prison in a LIMO for goodness sake! I hope somebody shoots the SOB! Ms. Nesbaum is in a undisclosed location in NYC, as she is STILL THAT scared of him, even after all these years of counselling and therapy.

SEA, I can't get the link you provided to work...keeps taking me to the iparenting board where you posted that! LOL!! DUHH!! I want to see the pics of your kids...and the pups! :-)

My daughter still has her curly locks and when she was little it would just hang in spirals when the humidity was high! I used to love to tug on a curl and watch it "boing" bounce back into place! {LOL} When we would go to the Mall everyone would always comment on her hair and then they would say "Is it natural?" {DUHH!} I was always tempted to reply, "No, I just spent all morning with a curling iron to get this look"!!! Hehe!

She used to just bawl her eyes out when she was abit older because she wanted straight hair like everyone else...Now, she finally realises how fortunate she is and that other people PAY to get their hair to look like hers!

Well, hope everyone has a great "hump" day! LOL! Hubby just called with a surprise and we're going on vacation afterall this summer!!! I am one happy girl today!! :-)

Dena~Like Barb, and Saraj said...all babies are different. One of my babies *dropped*, our second baby never dropped, and our third baby dropped, popped back up, then turned breech, and was turned back again...they do their own thing in there!

All three of our babies have a mix of Jake and my features, but some of their features can also be *genetic throwbacks* to a long ago ancestor too. Jake has dark hair, dark eyes, and and olive complexion...none of our children have dark hair or brown eyes! Maranda has light brown hair, Mason is blonder than blond with dark blue eyes, and Daytie Faith is a redhead with sky blue (gorgeous!) blue eyes. My eyes are blue too, but Maranda's eyes are green! We are what my mother calls a *Duke's Mixture* of features. I get the biggest kick out of young men who say a baby *can't be theirs, they look nothing like me*!! Better start shaking that Family Tree, because that baby could look JUST like a long gone ancestor. =)

Hope you are all having a great day. TC! =)

Geez. Makes me wonder how much my kids would have weighed had I had them on my due dates, or past my estimated due date. They were all two weeks early, and weighed anywhere from 8.13 to 9.10 - and that was early. I consider myself blessed I went early instead of later. They probably would have been 11-12lbs. (wincing)OUCH!

Dena~ All 5 of my children descended at different times. I know the "books" say "by this time, by that time"...but really every woman's body and baby clock is different. I read books on fetal development because I was interested in knowing how my babies were growing, and on relaxation/labor techniques, (including a diary of a Cherokee woman) but as far as alot of that other stuff out, I didn't pay much attention and just paid attention to what *my* body was doing. That worked for me. One of my kids was head down and engaged in the pelvis at 6-7 months, and my most recent baby was breech until 3 days before he was born. My doctor wanted to do the external version to turn him. I said, no, let's just see what happens. He turned. We were fine. I don't think there is any formula to guess with that one. :0)

Thanks Barb. :-)

Hubby and I both had white-blonde culry hair as toddlers. Now hubby has dark brown hair and mine is a light brown naturally. Your daughter will most likely follow in mommy and daddy's footsteps and lose the curls and get the darker hair when she's older. Babies and toddlers remind me a lot of ducklings. They have that pretty soft & light and fluffy down and then they get the feathers later on. ;-) WOW! You had an 11 pounder???? I have a friend who had one of those! lol! They come out as walking?! My daughter was my heaviest baby at 10.9. Anthony was 4 weeks "overdue" and weighed 10.6. :-o

SEA, your son’s smile is just breathtaking. No wonder he’s a baby model! I love the curls. My daughter has a bunch of curls at the back of her head, and I have no idea where they came from (my hair and hubby’s is super straight). Her hair is a dirty-blond color, and both hubby and I have dark brown hair. She’s just her own person, I guess, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Dena, are you talking about a baby that has “dropped”? I don’t have an answer, but I have my experience to share, and that’s that my daughter NEVER dropped! I was a week overdue and she hadn’t dropped, I wasn’t dilated even 1 centimeter! I ended up with a c-section and an 11-pound, 1 ounce healthy baby. So yes, like SEA said, all babies are different. And if yours is like mine, she’ll never want to come out!
