Ellyn: Civil War weekend sounds like fun. What level is your daughter? Mine is a junior, and I am a troop leader who is always looking for new activities and crafts. DD and I are leaving tonight for mother/daughter weekend at GS camp. My first time, so I'm excited!
Has anyone ever spilled something sticky ( like sweet tea) on their keyboard? I thought I had it all out, but my keys are really sticking and I can't get them cleaned. Any suggestions???

Wendy - Happy Birthday!!! (((0))) I am so glad you will have a birthday you enjoy.
LOL on the QOTD. My birthday for as long as I can recall (as an adult anyhow) has fallen on a family reunion (we attend three in my birthday month). Inevitably, there will be foods that I love there, and foods that I don't like at all. DH also usually brings along half of a salmon and grills it, and he will go out the night before (at his family reunion that is always on the bay, that is) and gather steamers for me, because he knows I love them. I then will steam them and serve them in a white wine/butter broth and we will have a feast of salmon and steamers and my favorite veggie: steamed asparagas. I am getting to be too much of a softy though, last year I had a hard time murdering my little steamers myself and I have never been able to cook crab or lobster at home or choose a live one to be cooked. Silly, I know since I WILL gladly eat one that comes cooked that I didn't meet previously.
Cake - I lost the recipe to my favorite made from scratch cake a while ago - it tasted subtly of almonds and was a white cake. I prefer choc cake with bavarian cream filling as a back up.
Bangs - yes, they are back in style and thank God, they give more variety that one length and long layered hair. I personally wear my hair at one length or close to one length (I have a round face and bangs make it look even rounder, and being overweight does not help). I am thinking about getting some longer layers put in, though. I need to decide if I want to let it grow for another 6 months or so to donate to locks of love again first.
J-MO - Yes, I think the girls would probably have a lot of fun, that is if my slightly spoiled only child would share ;o) she sometimes has a problem with sharing, we are working on it. She is very imaginitive, as I am sure your little one is, as well.
LH - hello! So sorry to hear about yoru dad and your TMJ. Hope dd has a wonderful time at the beach.
Must run and get some quick cure for dd's fish - seems to have somehow developed ich.
Quicky, Saraj - at first it was very hard to leave dd at day care, even though it was only for an hour. BUT I soon saw how much she enjoyed being there and she learns alot from other kids (social learning is so important). Sometimes I am sad now because she is in daycare or at my sisters house for up to 8 hours right now while I am in school - won't be so bad in the fall, I hope. BUT my point is that her best hours are spent elsewhere, she is only up long enough to get dressed in the am before I take her in, and then she is getting tired in the afternoon when I pick her up. In the fall, I will have her during the days when not in practicum, and then she will go to grandma's or an aunts in the late afernoon when I go to class, and dh will pick her up and bring her home. Most times I will be able to be home to tuck her in, but will miss dinner :o(. When I am done with school she will be ready to enter kindergarten, so her school hours will closely match my work hours. I am hoping to work in the same district she will be attending, so I can take her to school at the same time I go, and she can come to my room after school while I finish up. Boy that was a book!!

Yippee! Rummage sales today! Kiddies and I will be off thrifting and finding goodies. I love spending time with the kids. I bet it's hard to have to go to work and leave your kids behind. :-( Any of you really get sad about that?
Our pups are getting so big! One of the officers in town is going to buy one. That's kind of funny when you think about it. lol!

Angela~ Good question, I have no idea what's up with the bangs~that's why I mentioned it. Ew.
Mmmm..angel food cake..much better alternative to regular cake for birthdays. America is getting heavier! I say we turn serving that into the "norm". ;-)

Good morning all!
Jennifer~Welcome back. That was me that suggested you not type in all caps, but I don't know about the *whack job* thing. Did you check out spas and things on the internet yet?
Saraj~What is the deal with bangs? Of course they can change the shape of a person's face...that's why people have them.
Kerri~How's the jetlag? HeeHee! I know, it takes a couple of days to get your body adjusted. Have you seen the Changing of the Guard yet? LOL at *The Tube Thing*! It takes some time, but once you figure out the different lines, the tube is a great way to get around London. Don't forget to stroll through Piccadilly Circus!=)
QOTD~I love Mexican Food, so my favorite birthday meal is Jake arranging a babysitter and taking me out to a nice Mexican restaurant. I have not had a cake in ages, but when I was little I LOVED cherry cake, with tons of cherry frosting.
I better run...TC all!

We are traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC next week with our 4 year old daughter. It is a great place for children and family fun. My daughter is still a bit intemidated by the ocean (which could be a good thing), but she still has a ball in the sand and the pool in our hotel. I just wish there was a way to keep the sand from irritating her bottom so. I have heard baby powder will do the trick. Anyway, my family is really looking forward to our annual trip to the beach.

Happy Birthday, Wendy! I hope you have a pleasant day and children who sleep tonight!
The perfect birthday dinner for me is broiled scallops with rice pilaf and steamed vegetables on the side. Unfortunately, I seldom get that for a birthday dinner since good seafood restaurants are at a premium around here. As for birthday cake, I haven't had a birthday cake in the last 18 years. As a kid, though, my favorite was Black Midnight Cake from the 1956 Betty Crocker cookbook, frosted with my mom's homemade boiled chocolate frosting -- it was like having a quarter inch of fudge on top of the cake. I always wanted it the same way every year -- one piece mashed up in a bowl and stirred together with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It looked gross to onlookers, but it was the perfect birthday treat. Every bite had cake, fudge and ice cream. Yum! These days, I'm content with the memory.
Hope everyone has a great weekend. My daughter and I are Girl Scouting. This weekend is a Civil War history event which should be fun and interesting.

We would always have Angel food cake on our birthdays.
I have to say Jennifer D. You sound like a blast. I am looking forward to your LOUD opinions and expressions.
And Kerri, Canada is as wonderful as ever. Our election turned out not as some hoped, but all in all it was not a complete disastor.(sp?)

Good morning, everyone. Hope you all have a fun weekend planned! I don’t have anything big planned, but we always manage to enjoy it!
Kerri, England sounds wonderful. Have fun!
Wendy, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Enjoy your day! My birthday dinner is usually at a restaurant. My last one was at the Cheesecake Factory. I was just getting sick that day and for some reason even I can’t explain, I ordered the jambalaya… bad move. I didn’t get sick, but felt awful after that, and the next day when I had a full-blown sinus infection and looked at the leftovers, ew.
Yesterday’s question of the day: my hubby is sweet a lot of the time. Like this morning he made my lunch for me. Sounds simple, I know, but it was a big help and he dreads doing it as much as me.

Hey all well another question of the day! I am feeling a bit silly right now. I have hardly had any sleep. The girls are just not sleeping at all! Then I go to bed when they are asleep and no matter what they wake up as soon as I fall asleep. So LOL having a hard time here. Ok rambling
QOTD: Since its my birthday today (woohoo) what is your favorite birthday meal? And what type of cake do you like on your birthday?
Well I know this may sound weird, but I LOVE meatloaf. I make it with jack cheese and broccoli in the middle. With mashed potatoes and green beans and corn. MMMMMMMM My favorite! Whenever I go home for my birthday, my mom will make that for me, and everyone else hates it!! DH and the girls love it so mmmmmm its going to be ohhh sooo good tonight!
My favorite cake is banana cake. BUt I think this year I am going to make a white cake with chocolate frosting! MMMM! :) :)
Hope you all have a great day!

Hello everyone!
Well, I made it to England just fine, but had a heck of a time on the flight! They had to circle Heathrow airport for more than an HOUR yesterday since air traffic was "backed up"! UGG, it made an 8 hour flight 9!
I see we are doing a "question of the day"...good idea! I would have to say the most recent sweet thing my dh did for me was have flowers and a cadbury candy bar waiting for me in our hotel room when I arrived (he left for England 4 days before me). It was sweet and made me smile. However, all I did was hit the bed and sleep until he came back! Jet lag!
Rileys' mom...welcome back and congrats on the new baby! How is Canada? :)
JMO-I like your story! wink wink.
Anglea-did you actually see a rugby game while you were here? Just wondering how to go about finding one. I am bummed about Buckingham palace not being open for tours yet. I guess the "Royal family" does not go on holiday for another few weeks...
Well, I am off for my official second day of touring...I am hoping to locate the Florence Nightingale Museum using that "tube" thing...hee hee!
Cheerio!

Hi,
It's Jennifer or as some (cowards) may prefer to call me :
...."whack job"
Or, some others may believe I resemble their "old friend "Psycho Julie" instead?
Either way, my entries last week were my FIRST ATTEMPT AT PARTICIPATING IN ANY sort of CHAT ROOM or MESSAGE BOARD.
So:
-- I copied and pasted stupidly and somehow one entry became three very choppy, fragmented, and repeticious wanna-be attempts at making contact with some of you.
-- I WROTE IN ALL CAPS! ( OH Horrors!!!)
Will the Earth stop rotating on its axis?
Will the flowers in my garden cease to grow and prosper?
Or will I wake up a suddenly realize that I am Catherine the Great in full riding garb on my way for an afternoon at the stables?
Man, I am sorry if I appeared too "loud" to some of you but is it really that important in the end?
We are at war.
We are in an election year.
And most of us are parents. which is the most impt. and honorable job there is, in my opinion.
I now know that these "Sound Off's" are case sensitive.
Thank you to the nice person who gave me a clue about my poor ("yelling") etiquette without resorting to (anonymously) name calling like "whack job" and "Psycho Julie".
What would you say to your children if you saw them resorting to that sort of ridicule towards someone new at their school or in your neighborhood?
On a lighter note:
Thank you Barb for the exercise reminder. I have taken your suggestions to heart and will let you know how things progress...
It's very late and my four year old angel is beckoning me to snuggle with her.
I wish you all well and thanks again.

So...what's with the bangs thing coming back around? You'd think there'd be a new style for them and not just the old 80's thang. Maybe like a light whispy bang...nothing heavy. Sometimes bangs can help a heavy person with their face shape~ I have heard. I'm always excited to see what new style hits the streets next! (I just can't do the bangs, thouhg! lmao!)

Hey everyone!
I've been lax on answering emails lately...my time as been strapped with my new schedule. It's 8:19, and my teeth are brushed and I'm hittin' the hay.
A great day...I received my confirmation letter from the Cherokee Nation...They have confirmed all of my lineage and I have completed the first step in embracing my ethnicity. We are onto phase two - changing my race w/Social Security. I'm proud to be Native. Soon I will have my tribal card.
And Penny..thanks for the compliment..you too, Saraj, even though you don't wanna admit it that's ok ;0) Heehee.
Don't worry....most of us are too busy to conspire to spearhead your little first-person article. Geez...I've got plenty more to do with my time.

The State Journal posted a huge ad about how terrible smae sex marriages are and today, to my happiness, I see numerous people were completely disqusted with it...like I was. Hurray to the Journal for posting reader comments about how terrible the ad was! :-)
Yippee! My kids and I entered a poster contest in town and I won! :-) Free tix to the play is a great prize!
I'll also be posting the name of the magazine that will have my published article in it very son. I don't want anyone to know the name until it's actually out there! (shame on those bad seeds) ;-)
Have a nice night everyone!

to answer the QOTD, hmmm. my husband does little things for me every day to show how much he loves me and cares, but i guess the last really romantic thing he did was about 2 weeks ago....he put our daughter to bed, and filled our jacuzzi tub up, invited me to join him, and the rest gets x-rated from there! lol!

Good morning yall! I hope that everyone is having a good day so far....can't wait for this weekend...not that I have anything planned but hey, anything is better than work right?! LOL
I know that there are a few of you here that do pray and I would really appreciate it if y'all could say an extra prayer for my family...it is a really long story but I will try to give the short version:
My Granny (whom I am VERY VERY close to) has sold her house (of 45 years)so that she could move closer to me, my mom, and my aunt. My Granny doesn't deal with change very well and has a history of panic attacks - well yesterday she found out that she is going to have to have her cat (of 20 years) put down and well she just started flipping out - the panic attacks are back and worse than ever! On top of that my uncle (who lives in another state) is having surgery tomorrow to correct some gastrointestinal problems and we are all really worried about this one. I feel like my whole family is falling apart and I really need some extra prayers to come our way.
QOTD: ummmm.....last romatic thing DH DID for ME???? ummmmmmmmm.....I guess my engagement proposal.....3 years ago!!!!! Let's not go here......I love my husband and don't want to have to take his head off when I get home! LOL

Good morning!
Well, my doctors apt was a JOKE and a total waste of time! I won't go into the boring details, but I can add this one to my ever-growing list of "referals" or "wild goose chases" that my GP has sent me on in search of someone who has a clue about TMJ! {GRrrrRR!!!}
QOTD: Hubby did something romantic for me just last night!! LOL< with some help from our daughter! :-)...He took me out to eat where daughter works and when I got there, she had a table set up for us out on the deck overlooking the river with candlelight and rose petals all over the table!{they collaborated on that one I think!} We ordered a "Cheese Board" which is all these wonderful cheeses, breads, and dipping sauces served on a cutting board {yUmmMY!!} and I had a couple glasses of some wine that actually tasted good for once! LOL! {I am NOT a wine drinker!}...OH, and we also had some wonderful
Amaretto Cheesecake afterwards, served by our *favorite* waitress!! ;-)
Hubby knows how upset I have been lately about everything so he did this for me/us and it was wonderful to just sit out there by candlelight and eat and chat! I thought it was very romantic! Sure could get used to that!!:-) LOL!
Later, I helped daughter pack some stuff for her beach trip...my Lord, that child is taking her whole closet with her I think! {LOL!} I'm sure she will probably "downsize" it all today after she thinks about it and realises that last year she practically lived in her bikini and shorts for a week!
She is leaving tomorrow night at 5pm and I am stressing so much and miss her already!!
Alrighty! Guess who's had too much coffee this AM?!! LOLOL!!!
TC all and have a good Thursday!

Hey all. Well looks like there is another Wendy here besides me! I have not been here in awhile. I know that it has been calm since my email box has been quite empty lately. Anyway I thought that I would fill you all in on somethings.
We, as in Tanya at Iparenting and the rest of the iparenting spokesmoms had a meeting on Mon. This consisted of the way things are going and how they are going to be handled from now on.
First of all there will be a question of the day that I will try and put up each day. This will hinder conversations that might turn into another direction.
Also, you must know that spokemoms on these boards DO NOT have deleting rights nor will they ever have them. There is now someone from their tech support that will be doing all the deleting. I am to compile a list of posts to be looked at and Tanya and him will delete what is necessary. This means no name calling, no talking about anothers child(ren), any posts that are demeaning in anyway, bickering and so on and so forth. A post will be put up in the near future stating what is an "acceptable posts" and what will be deleted. Those types of issues need to be brought up to Tanya if you have any questions reguarding the deleting of posts.
Banning is pointless, and most likely will not happen often. We have seen those who have been banned come back time and time again. The best thing to do is ignore those whom you butt heads with. End of story.
I have most of the regular posters emails. If I do not have your email, I would encourage you to email me for a couple of reasons. 1) to talk to those who are posting negatively in private 2) for those who want to email in private to each other can exchange email addresses through me 3) to make you aware of anything out of the ordinary going on.
All the emails that I have recieved will NOT be made known to another person unless permission is given.
I hope to post again in a few days with the guidelines.
I hope you all have a wonderful evening.
QOTD What romantic thing has your DH or wife done for you lately?
Wendy

Margarita~ Oh no! We filled out the AKC registration form for Mrgarita's Cyber Gold so his name would be permanent. Yes, he found a home. :-) He will have a seperate "call name"..it would be hard to say his registered name every day, and for training. It's official!
(The new owner's were told of the game and really thought it was interesting!)
I don't feel a move will stress out our dogs. We'll be there with them. The pups will be in their new homes by then, anyway. Yes, Saygon is huge. He's a monster..and he won't stop fetching! lol!
Congrats Melissa! I bet you're feeling great!

Angela, I watched both of those shows last week (most of them, anyway) but missed it last night. You’re thinking of Allison from BB… I’m glad she lost. She was really an awful person. Did I miss anything interesting on either show?

Hey all!
Does anybody else watch Big Brother 5 and Amazing Race? I'm addicted to both this summer! I was SO happy that whatever-her-snotty-name-is got eliminated last night in the Amazing Race. I can't remember her name now, but her boyfriend is Donny, and she came in second place in Big Brother last Summer. If I talked to my husband, the way she talks to her boyfriend, Jake would leave my ass right there and fly home without me. =)
Cherokee~Hey chica! I'll email you later....I thought maybe you had fallen off the end of the earth or something. =0)
Saraj~The chocolate lab you have left is adorable! Who could say "No" to that little face? They are all cute, but his little face is too precious.
Melissa~Way to go! Slow and steady wins the race hon!
Have any of you ever seen how to type *kisses* on the 'puter? Jake sent me a message yesterday, and he put this....=)*(=.....for kisses to me. I thought it was kind of cute.
I gotta run...TC all!

We had the most awesome thunderstorm last night. It was so loud, the windows were rattling and I found an entire tree branch in our swimming pool this morning. I kept waiting to hear Esai on the monitor last night and was prepared to go get him, or for Madison to come bounding into our bed, (boys were at their dads)....but LOL...they sleep like the dead, slept right through it! We went to bed at 9pm last night, the storm started at 11pm and got really bad around 11:30, so DH and I got up to watch it, (that's wahat we do in AZ, LOL, storms are so rare, that they are big NEWS so we sit around and watch them) then went back to bed around 1am. **yawn** 6am came might early this morning after that.
Melissa~JMO-Mama is absolutely right (as others here who have mentioned this) it is much safer and easier on your body to lose your weight with moderate dieting and exercise, not just crash dieting. That's NOT good for your heart or circulatory system, not to mention it screws your metabolism up bigtime. You didn't gain this last week, and you didn't stay the same. Pat yoruself on the back! You are doing this the RIGHT way. If you keep this up, pretty soon (very soon) it will be 20, then 30lbs.
>>>>GO MELISSA<<<<<<<<!!!!

Hi Margarita~ You have the most interesting classes! I have a boring computer class for work this afternoon from 12-3pm. Blecchhht. YES! I love my job! As I said, I am around babies all day/night long..how can that NOT be good???
Well....time to move my laundry...I just heard the dryer buzz, the quicker I get it, the less ironing there is!

MELISSA, don't be discouraged! i think it's healthier to only lose one or two pounds a week. just think of what you'll weigh in 6 months!
CHEROKEE, nice to "see" you again! it's always hectic having houseguests, isn't it?? you love them but you love when they leave too!

Good morning everyone. Well my WW weigh in was last night and I lost another 1.4 pounds so that brings my (3 week) total loss to 8.8 pounds. I suppose I should not be discouraged, I think I am just in a foul mood because it time for those ovulation headaches to come back (which they have) and I am just ill about it. But hey, life goes on right?!

Hi guys.
I was just getting ready to go to bed and thought I would pop in here while I listened to Nightline.
SEA - Siagon sure is getting big - he is a nice looking puppy. Did you ever get my cyber pup officially named, or did you decide against that? Has he found a family yet? I saw a while back you mentioned something about moving, about the puppies or dogs or something being stressed out because of the move - did you guys buy a place? I am so out of it.
Cherokee - I am so happy that you are loving your new job!!
Hello to everyone else - hope you are all well. I have been working my fanny off. Thursday I have a final in my ed pysch class which was only a 3 week course. This is a great program but I have to wonder about this particular class. The teacher who presented it to use was asked to present it at the last minute, and he presented it using the schedule and material from the teacher who planned it. I don't understand how the heck they expect us to retain this very important information when they cram it into 3, 3 day weeks. Granted, each of those days we have this particular class for 2.5 hours, but still. Not much time to get the info down, and process it so that we can apply it, and then retain it. We are being introduced to some wonderful info in there however. Today we discussed progressive education, and what studies show the impact of progressive ed. to be. Many of the progressive ed. schools sound a lot like the unschooling info I read about when reading about SEA's homeschooling choices. SOme of the theologies I was familiar with, but not all so it was very interesting.
Well, my own lab puppy is getting into something that he shouldn't be, so I am out of here.
Night.

Well said Penny!
I proudly display a rainbow bumper sticker on my mini van supporting gay and lesbian relationships. No oje hs the right to tell anyone else how to live. (ha ha...tell that to this little overly conservative town)...but it's true. 100%
My children are being raised to think freely and know all that goes on around them. I'm very very proud of that.

Penny,
I found the sight to be both interesting and informative.
This may surprise a few, but I don't really feel that we have the *right* to tell people in gay relationships that they are not allowed to commit to each other.
Hmm...isn't a large part of the negative stigma on gays (by straight people) about the "promiscuity" of the gay lifestyle? Well, I hardly think that getting married is promiscuous. I don't particularly appreciate or endorse the homosexual lifestyle....but if two people are TRYING to make a committment to each that makes them spiritually, legally, and physically committed to that person, WHY are we telling them "no" to this also? This is very confusing to me. It doesn't make sense to me.
It doesn't matter if homosexuals are "choosing" their lifesyle, or if they were "born" into that lifestyle - I think we should at least encourage HEALTHY relationships among homosexuals, the same way we encourage them in hetrosexuals. Gays are human beings too, they hurt, cry, feel pain (emotional and physical) and crave/need to be loved the same as us. I think it is just plain MEAN to "put the law out" on them because they desire to make a mature emotional and legal decision to love their partner. Just because I don't "agree" necessarily with the lifestyle doesn't mean I can't have empathy for it. I think the ban (though I support Bush on every other agenda)is not constitutional and unfair. "The pursuit of happiness".....
I don't think we are rewarding another person's lifestyle over anyone else's, I think it is just giving them the same as we have. A chance to stand before their family and friends and declare their love, be loved, share property and medical decisions(legally)and live life abundantly.
Whew. There. Had to say that.
How is everyone doing. Melissa...GOOD JOB on the WW....you are moving along!!
Angela~ Where are you at girl? I've not seen too many posts by you!
Hey to everyone else out there...my job is fabulous...I get to hold little teeny tiny preemies all day/night long. How can that NOT be good? :) LOL...some of these kiddies weigh as little as 1.9lbs. Amazing! Makes me really appreciate and feel blessed that I had five healthy, chubby, chubby, chubby babies with no issues when they were born. Thank you GOD!
Take care, I'm going to pick out a movie with the kids tonight.

Hello, everyone.
Melissa, you probably did tell us about your weigh-in… I’m sort of scatterbrained lately. Great job! I have to say, though, two pounds in a week is excellent! Don’t let the small numbers get you down! It was through small numbers that the weight crept on (I’m assuming) and it’s healthiest for it to creep off slowly as well. A steady loss of two pounds a week will have you feeling wonderful in no time. Keep up the great work!
Penny, I agree with you 100%.

Dear friend,
Congress is about to vote on amending the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage equality to same-sex couples.
Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone's rights. Yet our Senators will vote on this amendment in the next 48 hours.
It's urgent that we speak up now. This hateful divisiveness has no place in America. Please join me in saying so, at:
http://www.moveon.org/unitednotdivided/
Equality in marriage is the civil rights issue of our generation. We can't let anyone, or any group, be singled out for discrimination based on who they are or who they love.
Thank you.

Good morning y'all! I hope that everyone is having a good morning! I am kinda nervous about my weigh in tonight. I did well with my eating this week but after last week and my disappointment of only losing 2.6 pounds last week (I found my little book - I think I gave incorrect numbers yesterday!) I am worried that my weight loss will just continue to decrease week by week. I hope not though.
LH ~ I am sorry to hear about your recent findings of Fibromyalgia. That is terrible - I hope that this doctor you are going to today will be able to help you out! And your dad, how sad - I hope that things work out soon.

Just popping in to say Good Morning and hope everyone is enjoying their summers! Don't blink your eyes, for it will be Fall before we know it! {LOL!}
I have a doctors apt today which is about a 3-hr drive away...not looking forward to the barrage of tests I'm having done {especially drawing blood! ACK! :-0}, but maybe this guy will actually be able to "fix me" and not just give me more pills to take! {My TMJ is turning into Fibromyalgia} Not much faith in doctors anymore here, but we'll see.
I have been very stressed about my dad who is getting worse everyday! He is a totally different person than he was 1-month ago and I honestly believe he is in the early stages of Alzheimers...possibly even the kind that progresses quickly and very suddenly...NOW, if I can only convince his doctor to run some evaluations without letting dad know what's up!
Our daughter leaves Friday evening for the beach...not real happy about that either, but she deserves the break from her summer studies and hard work she has done so far! We each have one of those mini picture frames that you can record a message on, so at least I will have that to listen to when I start missing her real bad! ;-(
{Yes! I suffer from "only child syndrome"!! LOL!}
Melissa, WTG on the weight loss so far! Keep up the good work and you will reach your goal in no time! How have you been? Please drop me an email sometime and catch up! TC!
Barb, enjoy those "early nights" while they last! Before you know it, you will spend your wknd nights worrying while your children are out having all the fun! {LOL! So true!} As for activities...get out that Monopoly or Scrabble board and challenge hubby to a game, play cards, lay out on lawnchairs in the backyard and stargaze {I always look for falling stars!, organise your photos together and have him help put them in an album...I guess it doesn't really matter as long as you are doing it together! :-) TC!!
SEA, I'm sorry about your dad hun, that must be hard to remember. My dad is extremely intelligent too and you are correct that they deal with things and people differently! TC!
Well, this is a novel! LOL! Hope everyone has a good day!

Had a great weekend! My good friend came from Iowa with her daughter. She spent a few nights and we had a lot of fun!
My father died about 17 years ago. He drank a lot and popped pills. I say he commited suicide. He was a genious (at least this is what his IQ told us!) and went to college to be a professor, but then, for some reason, took the lazy approach to life and had a self-pity episode. Sometimes geniouses have a hard time dealing with the regular people in the world.
It can really be tough. I think this is why there are a lot of great people who end up killing themselves.
The kids and I are off to the lake! It's incredibly beautiful here!
As far as Jennfer's posts go...I really don't see anything wron with them.
Oh well...

Barb -
I can relate to the issues that follow losing a father - especially a father who was close to you. My dad died suddenly just before Christmas 2000. Though I didn't have to watch him suffer through a long illness, it hit me hard. I still have days that his loss feels like a fresh, open wound. So after a little self-pity, I take stock of my own life, look at all of the ways that he influenced my life and then I give thanks for the fact that I had him in my life for 40 years and that he didn't have to suffer through a long, debilitating illness. I am finding that the adage "Time heals all wounds" has some truth to it.

Ellyn, I really do agree with you. That Morrie guy was something special. But it hit a little too close to home for me… I pretty much watched my father die like that (not Lou Gherig’s Disease, but a torturous end nonetheless), and I’m still not over it. So it was hard for me to read it.

Barb - I just read "Tuesdays with Morrie" a couple of weeks ago. I really loved that book. I guess I can understand how you might have found it depressing because the subject matter. But I found it to be very uplifting. Despite having to watch his ability to do the things he so loved to do taken away from him, I was really amazed at the way Morrie was still able to see the good in life. Personally, I think it would have been so easy to fall into the trap of self-pity and just quit living. But Morrie never did. I hope that if I'm ever forced to face something that devastating that I can find the same grace that he had. And after only "knowing" Mitch Albom as a sportswriter, I enjoyed reading his work on another topic. I think I'll try "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" when my reading schedule frees up again.

Hey All!
Whew! It's been awhile! Well, all my relatives are gone, My SIL is on a plane with her babies back to South Korea after a really lovely visit. One SIL left for Colorado with her daughter yesterday...Of course, my other two SIL (the resident Bruehas that live in my neighborhood) made complete idiots of themselves and managed to piss off the whole family (that says a lot, since typically they can do no wrong) and no one is speaking to them right now. They just left for Europe, long story, but suffice to say...LOL....everyone has been saying "sorry girl" to me for the last few days and. HA! You give folks enough rope, they can hang themselves. I never had to say a word. Those of you who know me, know what it situation is :0)
Vacation...well, we are going to go to Jimenez late August, early September. I don't think this will be a vacation though, as it is a condolence trip for my husband's late uncle's wife...these people were very good to him and in fact, raised him a good part of his life. They need somethings done to her house, as he was ill for quite some time, and their children don't have the $$ to do them, (the economy is wretched in Mexico) some repairs Rob will do, I am going to be painting the indoors of the house for her. It's about an 8 hour trip after the 6 hour drive to El Paso, so about 14 hours or so. They are good people. It's important that we go.
Sorry I haven't been keeping up on the emails. With my new job, and relatives staying with us, life has been a little hectic to say the least. You gals know I love ya though :0) Next week I go to nights, and now that everyone has gone home, I can relax a little. I am on days all week this week. Better run and finish getting ready for work.

Good morning, everyone. I had a quiet weekend. Saturday my hubby and I took our daughter to a park and we fed the ducks, rode the tiny train and walked around. Then we went out to lunch. It was fun but HOT. It’s been 95 degrees every day for the past few weeks, and super humid, so any time outside is sweaty time. Saturday night hubby and I watched “My Little Eye”, an awful movie. Don’t even waste your time with it! We were bored…. I was working on my Seattle scrapbook (yes, it’s been a few months and I’m not finished! We had like eight rolls of film, plus I’m adding commentary and other things I kept for it, so it’s a long process) and hubby wanted to watch a movie. It’s about some kids living in a house that’s wired onto the Internet and they start dying. Oh, it was awful.
Yesterday we celebrated our friend’s 30th birthday. We bought him gift certificates for the movie theater so he could see “Anchorman” (he loves Will Ferrel) but he had already seen it and said it was horrible. Later in the day we went swimming.
About being bored… does anyone have any Friday and Saturday night events at home that you do that you’d like to share? When Izzy goes to bed by 7 p.m. on those nights, we get kind of stir-crazy in the house. The early nights are one part of parenthood I’m still trying to get used to.
Jennifer, that’s too bad that you’re feeling stressed. I’m not a single parent and I’m not religious, but when I’m feeling stressed, I’ve found exercise helps. Also, if you can go on vacation, try to go with a friend that makes you feel good about yourself. Good luck!
Wendy, I’m on the waiting list at the library for our next book club book, so hopefully I can start this week. What else are you reading right now? I just finished “Tuesdays With Morrie”, about a popular sports writer who spends one
day a week with his old professor who's dying of Lou Gherig's Disease. It's almost unbearably sad; I don't know why I did this to myself because it depressed me, but it was a touching story.
Have a good day, everyone!

I WANT AN ADVENTURE WITH MY 4 YR OLD AND HER NEW FAMILY IS DOING SO MANY FUN THINGS I FEEL I CAN'T KEEP UP. INTELLECTUALLY, I KNOW THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION, BUT VISCERALLY:
IT SUCKS!
I WANT MY DAUGHTER TO THINK I'M THE GREATEST-- LIKE SHE USED TO NOT LONG AGO...
BUT I ALSO NEED TO BEGIN TO LET GO OF MOTHERHOOD AS MY SOLE SOURCE FOR SELF- ESTEEM.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS.
I HOPE FOR AND LOOKFORWARD TO GETTING YOUR RESPONSES SOON.

ANYONE HAVE A VACATION SPOT THAT FITS THE BILL?
I WANT TO HEAR YOUR SPA STORIES!
WHERE SHOULD I GO FOR ONE WEEK TO COMPLETELY PAMPER MYSELF AND HAVE FUN?
SO, PUH--LEEZE, RESPOND?

angela - I was kind of *eh* with the vinegar. Sometimes it appealed to my taste, other times it was just soggy on the chips. What I refused to try was the haggis in Scotland. Several of the people I was with said it was good. I just couldn't find a way to think that lungs, pancreas and intestines chopped up in oatmeal and cooked in a sheep's stomach would be even remotely appealing!

I took care of my son by myself for the first 18 months of his life, so I know the stress of taking care of a kid on your own. I went out a lot with a good friend, that was a great stress reducer. I have never been to a spa, so I can't help you there, but if you are looking for a friend, I am a good listner. Kerri - I studied in Britain for an interim when I was in college. I found that when I returned, I didn't even want to look at a french fry for about six months. Chips came with everything, and I was so grateful when I found a place that served something other than chips with the meal. I also found breakfasts to be a little odd in some places. Stewed tomatoes and pork & beans aren't breakfast foods where I come from! While there I learned to distinguish between lamb (liked it) and mutton (hated it). Mutton has a very distinct "odor" that made it largely unpalatable to me.

We don't have any special vacation plans this year so far, probably just spending lots of time in the pool, fishing and hiking at the local state park. The kids love it, when they're happy, I'm happy. Have a nice weekend y'all.

Jennifer~I'm not a single parent, but I'll respond to you. For starters, I realize you said you are new to this, so maybe you did not know that you should not type in ALL CAP'S...it denotes *yelling* and is hard to read. If you are looking for a retreat, maybe start searching online? There are lots of spiritual retreats out there, and drinking or smoking does not mean you cannot practice spirituality.

Kerri~LOL! I never cared for the food in Great Britain either. One word of advice....if the menu says it has *mince* in it....beware! Mince is like hotdogs....you really cannot be sure what is in it. =)

HELLO!!!!
SINGLE-PARENTS CAN YOU HEAR ME?
I NEED A VACATION!
CAN YOU HELP ME FIND ONE?
STRESS IS LITERALLY KILLING ME.
I SPENT 2 DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL LAST WEEK FOR WHAT THEY CALLED A ...
"STRESS-INDUCED SEIZURE..."
SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING, I LOST ALL FEELING IN BOTH LEGS. I COULDN'T WALK AT ALL--- ONLY THEN TO HAVE THEM SPASMING OUT OF CONTROL,
(a truely terrifyingexperience).

DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW OF A SPIRITUAL RETREAT THAT IS BOTH FAB AND YET, NOT TOO PRECIOUS (I SMOKE CIGS AND ENJOY A COCKTAIL SOMETIMES)?
-- JEN
--- JENI NEED TO TAKE A VACATION TO REMEMBER WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE WITH OTHER GROWN UPS AGAIN... (AND I MIGHT EVEN HAVE FUN!)

I WANT TO HEAR YOUR SPA STORIES!
WHERE SHOULD I GO FOR ONE WEEK TO COMPLETELY PAMPER MYSELF AND HAVE FUN?

Wisconsin trip planned for the last week in July.

My husband, son and I are going to the Wisconsin Dells for the 5th year in a row. We always stay on Lake Delton in a loft at Island Bay Resort. We love go-karting, playing miniature golf and spending one day at Familyland water park. Even when the weather doesn't cooperate, we like to sit on the porch outside our cabin and watch the rain on the lake. Our son loves to play in the sand at the resort's beach and him and I like to throw the frisbee or play volleyball on the beach, too. It sure is a nice break from the everyday routine here in Chicago...even the air smells better up there!

HELLO PARENTS!
I AM NEW AT THIS SO PLS FORGIVE ANY STYLISTIC ERRORS....
I AM A 38 YR OLD SINGLE MOM IN MICHIGAN WHO HAS A VERY PRECOCIOUS 4 YR OLD, EMMA GRACE.
I HAVE BEEN DIVORCED FROM HER DAD FOR OVER 2 YRS BUT WE WERE STILL "ROMANTIC" (Ahem) UNTIL ABOUT 6 MO'S AGO....
THAT'S WHEN HE MET AMY.
34, PRETTY, AND IN THE MIDST OF GETTING OUT OF A BAD MARRIAGE, HE STEPPED IN TO "RESCUE" HER AND THEY FELL IN LOVE.
I WAS DEVASTATED AT FIRST. BUT JUST AS I BEGAN TO ACCEPT THE CHANGE, I LEARNED THAT AMY HAS A 4 YR OLD DAUGHTER TOO, BAILEY.
NOW EMMA AND BAILEY ARE BEST FRIENDS. EMMA'S ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT WHY CAN'T SHE GO TO AMY'S TO SEE BAILEY...
I AM OVER MY EX -- BUT LETTING MY EMMA GO TO BE WITH ANOTHER WOMAN AND BE PART OF A REAL "FAMILY" IS LITERALLY KILLING ME.
I SPENT 2 DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL LAST WEEK FOR WHAT THEY CALLED A STRESS-INDUCED SEIZURE.
I NEED A VACATION SO BADLY -- BOTH ALONE AND WITH MY GIRL...
WHAT CAN I DO TO LET GO?
DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW OF A SPIRITUAL RETREAT THAT IS AFFORDABLE AND NOT TOO PRECIOUS (I SMOKE CIGS AND ENJOY A COCKTAIL SOMETIMES)?
I WANT AN ADVENTURE WITH MY 4 YR OLD AND HER NEW FAMILY IS DOING SO MANY FUN THINGS I FEEL I CAN'T KEEP UP. INTELLECTUALLY, I KNOW THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION, BUT VISCERALLY:

WHEW!
I WILL CHECK FOR RESPONSES TO BOTH THE SINGLE-PARENT ISSUES AS WELL AS THE VACATION IDEAS.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS.

I am going to Charleston for a couple of days during the 2nd week of September with my best friend. She moved to Colorado with her boyfriend and I haven't seen her in almost a year. I am so excited! Just the 2 of us and a lot of bar hopping - thank goodness for the cab companies!! LOL Other than that I am not sure about a vacation with me and DH maybe a weekend getaway to his grandparents cabin in the mountains but that is about it!
LH - Myrtle Beach is in my neck of the woods! LOL - about 2 hours away!! - ahhh, many happy childhood memories there!!!

Margarita -
The porch floor project is fairly simple, and it doesn't involve altering any historical feature of the house. We're just stripping off the old fir tongue-and-groove flooring (most of which was old when we bought the house 11 years ago) and replacing it with new tongue-and-groove flooring. It's basically a maintenance project. I would like to be able to return it to it's original state someday (with the full-length columns it had in the old picture we have). Maybe if I win the lottery this weekend we can!

Dh took his week off when we moved. And he has taken so many days off this year so he technically has no real days off left until September. We might take a few day trips, but that is most likely it. Next year is our 10 year Wedding anniversary, so we really want to go to Aruba in the late spring. We cant travel during the winter because that is his busiest time at work. And this spring we put alot of money into the move and the house, so we are finding ourselves to be a bit broke. So we are going to plan a big party for Annabelles First Birthday. I have a good size family and hopefully people will be able to make it. BBQ!!!! I am thinking I might do a beach theme...who knows.
Hope you all have a great time on whatever it is you all do this summer.
Enjoy!!!!

Our daughter is leaving next week to go to Myrtle Beach for 2-weeks with her best g/f and her parents...THAT is part of our "vacation" {time alone!} although we have never been away from her for more than a week so it will be difficult...well, sort of! LOL!
We are taking that time to ourselves to do some things around the house, some evenings out or having friends over...then, the 2nd week we are going to Atlantic City for 4-days and staying at my SIL's condo in which I plan to RELAX and maybe hit it big in the casino!!! :-)
In late August I get to go spend a wknd at a healthspa with my bestest friend and I am really looking forward to that! Lots of massages and hot tub/sauna time and I imagine I will just stay in my bathrobe the whole time! LOL! {This is the same friend who asked me to go to Paris with her last summer and I had to turn her down {after much consideration tho!} because I have only flown once and am absolutely TERRIFIED of it! ;-( {She works for the airlines} I know, I know...I'm nuts for doing that, but maybe one day I will get up the courage to fly again!
Hope everyone has a great wknd! We're going into town tonight for dinner and a "Walking Tour" in which all the little shops stay open late and "host" local artists/craftspersons doing demonstrations of their work and have it for sale...we're hitting some yard sales and auctions Saturday and then Sunday I'm having the whole family out for a cookout and swim! This is to make up for the crappy wknd we had last week! LOL!
TGIF!!!

Every day is like a mini vacation for me. I'm so lucky that I can stay home with the kids. We have fun all of the time. :-)
One of the Slumlords in our little town destroyed two of the most beautiful neighborhood trees yesterday. They were even on the city side of the street. He hired soneone who was chainsawing without chaps (not very smart) and he butchered them. Now they're real top heavy and may fall into the house they sit in front of on the next windy day. I'm sure it was not legal...one of the other neighbors actually called the city and complained. I see the police were at the Slumlord's house today. I hope he got fined and repremanded.
What a nice day! Perfect temp and rainy. A great summer day! The kids are all decked out in rain gear playing outside. How cute!

LOL... vacation?? I have 3 weeks off in August but a long list of "to-do's." There is so much to around here: insulate the floor and heater vents, painting, fence repairs, replacing a bridge, building stalls, etc.
We do have several weekend trips planned - all family reunions. The farthest away we will be is in the neighboring state. We also will also take a weekend or two to take dd to fun places, like the zoo down in Portland (quality far exceeds the two closer to us).
Ellyn - you and I could do a chore swap, and then maybe it would seem more like a vacation ;o). I used to dream of owning a business that restored historical homes and buildings - I would love it. How strict will the guidelines be for restoring the porch since your building is historical? There is no market for that sort of business here, unfortunately, AND since having dd I feel so passionate about becoming a teacher. I am learning more and more about how hard a teacher's job is and I still am excited to do it!! I said once to my sister that teachers were underpaid - my sister that is a CPA - bless her heart she said "really, think of all the benefits they have - holidays and the summer off..." LOL IF only it was really that pretty... my sister gets 2 months off a year, any time, and makes 70K+, has benis all paid, has 5 years of college education and a teacher in my state tops out at about $55k with a masters degree + additional college credits, gets about 9 weeks total off in a year (July is the only whole month a teacher gets off) and gets paid benis. I love my sister and I know that once I am teaching she will see what I am talking about. She of course, being my big sis knows I am intelligent, but I think she has a little of that old attitude that only those who can't do anything else teach. But, she also thought being a parent was easy until she started taking our yong nieces and nephews for weekends, and staying the night here with dd... lol she is exhuasted by the time she leaves and says she doesn't know how I keep my house as clean as it is. When my nieces and nephews stay there, she can't keep her kitchen clean. DOn't get me wrong - I adore my sister, she is brilliant and she is TOUGH and she is independant. She kyaks, hikes, runs, swims and she participates in state to state bike rides and ini triathalons. I always value her opinion. She is also a great gardener and cook. Sorry, I didn't mean to go off like that, but I thought her comments were interesting.
